Hey Guys,

My Dr just put me on Oratane (Generic of roaccutane). My skin has had its ups and downs but in the past month it has gotten to the worst point ever. :erm: I have no idea why, but I took a trip to the Doc and she put me on 3 months of this stuff.

A few of my friends have been on it and they have had great results, I'm on day 5 now and my face has noticeably improved already! I must admit my lips are dry like a mother *****er!

I wanted to ask if any of the forum members have been on the stuff before and whats your review of the medicine?

Holy sht. The doc put you on accutane and didn't talk you through the side-effects?

Some of the side-effects are permanent...which is why its usually considered to be a last resort type deal, not a casual going to the doc once thing.

And yes, most/all people get the dry lips thing.

Literally saved my life, keep up the water intake, make sure you have something that your lips can absorb. So vaseline is out of the question. Use something that your lips will absorb. Stay away from oil based lipbalm as it is not absorbed.

Stay out of the sun, not sure how bad your skin is but you may need a 6 month course. You have done it at the right time with winter coming. Yes there are side effects, are they worse than having to face everyday with acne? Hell no, side effects over bad acne any-day.

You should however go and get your blood work done, i am not sure of your age and so on but go and make sure you do not have a gluten/wheat/dairy issue. You will be amazed how milk/ice cream and dairy products can cause cystic acne.

Well she said it was looking like a early case of cystic acne. I could definitely see that it was getting worse.

The only things she told me:

1) wash skin as usual, also use toner.
2) always moisturize a couple times a day
3) wear SPF 30+ sun screen
4) Don't drink (one at the most) :( :(
5) go for a liver test every month

and that's around it :erm:

anything I should Know?

You mentioned cystic acne, do you eat much dairy?

Cystic acne is linked to dairy, if you drink plenty milk and eat stuff like ice cream and cheese. You may have a dairy issue, have you tried discontinuing certain foods? I no longer touch dairy, i eat pizza but from what i have read with the heat the pizza needs to be made most of the hormones are destroyed. Milk is full of hormones that cause cystic acne.

Stay away from white bread and rolls as well.

Yeah I also get issues with dairy.

Cystic acne i know is caused by dairy for me anyhow, took me years to figure it out. I used to drink milk, eat yogurt and then sit with cystic acne for weeks. Cut out dairy and i barely get acne anymore. Dairy issues come out in different ways, farting, bloated but for many it comes out in the form of cystic acne due to the hormones in dairy products and inability to properly digest dairy products.

Even milk chocolate can cause issues but i have found i can eat chocolate and pizza without any issues within reason of course. Give me milk, ice cream, yogurt and the next morning that sore cystic acne is in place. cystic acne is the worst, it spreads quickly. The acne is not easily treated due to the fact that it can take days for anything to happen. You want pimples that comes up, give you the white head and are done the same day, cystic acne however is a month long thing and continued use of dairy will prolong it indefinitely. Treating it is difficult, scratching, picking and popping without taking care can see it spread quickly.

The first thing people should do with acne is cut out dairy and give it up 6 weeks and see what happens. No good taking drugs for something dairy/wheat/gluten etc is causing, once the drugs have cleared up your face and you go off them you will still be eating the very thing causing your cystic acne. So naturally the acne will reappear within 6 months, vitamin A is stored so the drugs keep you going a few months after finishing them making it feel like the problem is gone but you soon find out you need another course which is not recommended. Basically you are treating the symptom and not eliminating the cause.

use nipple cream. For the dry skin you can buy a big tube OTC. It will beat any lip-ice lebello ect

Sun block spf 30 and avoid the sun generally.

Do not take any vitamin A supplements with it as it directly blocks the drug.

Dont be alarmed when your acne gets worse .... it will get worse before it gets better.

for the dry eyes tears naturalle 1 drop four times a day

The side-effects of the generics are far worse than roaccutane, if you can afford it would definitely be advisable to use the original.

First off the original is no longer available due to all the lawsuits. Being a victim of this myself it is not something I would recommend. It should only be used in the most extreme cases. Looking like the start of cystic acne is not sufficient justification imho. Really my advice in this case would be to just not use it. If the acne does get to the point where you think it's justified go for the lowest dose possible.

I used oratane, besides the dryness everywhere I had no other side effects. This was about 10 years ago. Im basically acne free bec of oratane.

That's in the USA. Roche still distributes roaccutane in SA. Attention to detail is key.
Ok then I'm mistaken. It's not thumbsucking though.

I was on it while in college. In my IMO, this is the only sure way of getting rid of acne on a almost always permanent basis. I suffered cracked lips, skin so dry it somtimes bled a little (yes...I applied cream like 3 times a day), dry eyes and also bad back ache.

It does suck at times :( Dry skin and lips but I would rather have that than pimples. Did you go for a blood test?

My face is so dry right now I'm gonna die
Although I know it is going to worth it.

I never in my life thought that I would have needed to take such extreme meds for my skin, and here I am. E45 Cream is my new best friend and I put that stuff on like 4-5 times daily and then not to mention lip-ice (but I will go out and get some of that stuff that was mentioned earlier in the thread).
