Road deaths need 'radical' solution

the car on the right has right of way, even if correcting a mistake, the car on the left must yield.

its annoying but its to prevent accidents and fighting over the same space.

well that's what I thought - IMO a person must always give way to the right

but then again our road planners like to design stuff that cause major headaches
 
indeed. enforce the current rules/laws first before making new ones.

traffic officers need to be visible and policing all offences, not just speed traps as some said, its the easiest and laziest work. those things are money printing machines. i need to buy shares in them somehow...

not using indicators, skipping traffic lights, not obeying 4 way stop rules, not obeying yielding rules (yield to the traffic on the right), stopping in the middle of a traffic light intersection at peak times, cutting the queue line, much more, all these simple small things people transgress and create frustration in other people at the receiving end. it all adds up. that persons goes bossies and causes problems further along.

i also suppose always catching minibus taxis because they do transgress the most and then get accused of targeting them doesnt help, it probably discourages them completely. the city needs to protect their law enforcers no matter the political nonsense.

I am pretty sure other infractions other than speed is a money printing machine.. it just requires effort to 'know' where to be and this is once again where tech could assist if not replace the need for an officer (been working on a solution for this). The problem is, albeit other infractions are now as common as finding an ant, prosecuting is harder as they not equipped to deal with it as it was never their primary focus. Ironic as these minors now have become way way worse and more dangerous than speeding.

I was ahead - thus IMO had right of way - I believe the general rule is "give way to the right"

this sort of thing happens daily at this part of the road in the pic. people in the LEFT lane will dice with you to get ahead and then force you into the island or to slam on brakes!

I've seen cars on the right forcibly blocked by cars (that were behind them on the left) accelerating past to get ahead so much so that they nearly caused a few rear ends.

Then you get those three lane freeways where the fast lane disappears in order to merge traffic into two lanes. It is a dangerous merge as you have the lunatic lane merging with the granny lane.
 
Title should read "SA needs a radical solution" One thing you'll never see is a traffic cop giving his "ignoring the laws rules and regulations" taxi driving brother a ticket. His taxi driver brother rather gives him a nice couple of R100s to thank him for being there.
 
You where in the passing lane, he was in the travelling lane - your passing lane was dissappearing and you where moving into his lane. Strictly speaking I would guess he would have the right of way but he shouldn't really have been passing on the left either.
If you were merging from the left, he'd have right of way, merging from the right is a gray area, I'd assume you as you're passing him on the right.

The moral of the story is that a dangerous situation was created because both wannabe hardarses were too idioric to do the curteous thing and let the other one in.

That is the south African way. I often can spend 15 minutes just trying to get out of my road, people just don't let you in.

Like the police actually doing something when people speed, or drive recklessly, or jump red lights, or drive unroadworthy vehicles, or use their phones while driving, or .....

.... oh fekkit, pipe dreams on my part.
 
At our workplace across the globe, this is just a snap shot of how road risks are integrated into our risk assessment process. It requires disciplined execution e.g. no one can travel without a journey plan signed by a supervisor.

This is called an Issue Base Risk Assessment. In an ideal world, Government Traffic Dept would be doing a Baseline risk assessment which would inform Individual/companies Issue Base risk assessment. Easy hanging fruits if they were not lazy.

Obviously there should be disciplined execution i.e. deal with corrupt officials.

We deserve better than we getting from government. Having said that, Safety begins with me.
