Road trip advise needed

Your biggest problem with a beach buggy is going to be security. You can't leave it alone anywhere with all your kit in, which means no stopping and having a beer in a pub or a meal in a restaurant unless you can sit watching the buggy. It also means unpacking everything every night.

I'd rather find a poked old Toyota double cab.

Awesome - to quote the Afriguy :)

Are coming in via Transkei or going round?
We are debating the route... wife's family was from the Kokstad area so we want to go to Kei Mouth, Coffee Bay, Qunu, Mqunduli, etc. and then the NM Museum in Mthatha. So the route from Mthatha to Durban is undecided... I want to go to Port St Johns/Lusikisiki and she wants to go inland to Kokstad via Mount Frere !! Her great (or great great) grandfather was one of the first traders to be granted land by Adam Kok and the wife wants to visit the Kokstad museum to see the section dedicated to him. Don't know why as she already has the book.

And NO, I'm not going to take the untarred "road" from around Flagstaff to Mount Frere. I don't have a death wish!!

JNB via Upington to CPT.

CPT to George to PE to EL to Port St Johns to Port Edward to Durban to St Lucia.

St Lucia to Durban to JNB.

In a beach buggy? Hmmmm.... you'll need plenty of luck and quite a bit of time 'cos that beach buggy ain't going anywhere in a hurry.

On the positive side... you'll need plenty of pit stops and being on the coastal road will be scenic with many places to explore.

Imagine doing this entire route and then getting to St Lucia, turning around and going back to Durban - the hell with the gems that await from St Lucia to Pongola to Joburg, a shorter route with more scenery imo. The Fever Tree forrest, the wildlife (I saw elephants from the highway, ffs!) and the incredible waterside lodge in piet retief - for no reason other than the excellent fillet steak at prices half of what we pay in the city.

St Lucia back to Durban! Pfft!

Work Kosi-Bay into that trip. You will never be disappointed.

By far the most beautiful peace of ocean I have ever seen in my life.

Probably will as the last time we stopped at Lake St Lucia before heading back to PE. This time we will continue North and enter the Kruger and then head West.

Just make sure you get there early. I think they only allow 20 or so vehicle in at a time. Try and stay there for low and high tide. The transformation is mind blowing. Make a day of it. I will never forget that day we spent there.

Did both last year. Stick to the N2.

If you're going through the Transkei in a buggy timing is important. You really don't want to get stuck in traffic going through the towns in a buggy.

 not going to happen.

If you end up at Port St Johns you just have to go to Steve's Restaurant.

and don't intend to full up there. There is one petrol station and you'll queu forever. They actually put barricades up to prevent the queu from bringing the entire town to a stand still.

Avoid the Transkei areas on grant day, it's utter chaos. Once took me 11 hours from East London to Port Shepstone on the N2.
