So I've been getting fairly okay reception over the past 23 months on my S4 and only used the 1gig for navigation when on the road and wifi at home.

The thing is I've just moved to a new place and I have absolutely no reception in here. Can't receive a call, can't make a call. I have this R100 Nokia phone on MTN and that gets perfect reception inside. Once I walk a few metres out the door I'm back on the network, so it's fine outside, once I'm inside, its dead.

Question is, do I force the phone onto the Vodacom network when I'm inside (I tried and I get reception with it), and once I go out put it back to auto. Will forcing it to Vodacom give me any surprises in billing? How does forcing it to Vodacom affect my data usage and billing or do I just not use data when the 'R' symbol is on?

Also like to know the answer to your question...

No, there currently are no roaming charges for Cell-C users roaming on Vodacom South Africa's network (65501).

Your normal Cell-C data rate and data bundles will apply.

So today Vodacom 3G roaming started working in my area even though I have Cellc 3G coverage. Not that Vodacom is any better here but nice to know that it is starting to happen more. Very cool now one can actually use data.....

Hi AR_GTR

Cell C has a roaming agreement with Vodacom, which allows Cell C subscribers to use the Vodacom network when outside Cell C coverage areas.

This will not have an impact on your billing as standard rates will still apply as per your tariff plan.

Do not force a network change when you’re in areas where Cell C coverage is good.

What happens when you force it, any limitations.
The thing is "good" is a relative term.

For instance cellc still have trouble with steam. Or if I get too many lag outs that day I'd prefer roaming on Vodacom.
Steam is Data heavy though.

Then there's the case of my windows phone that keeps switching to Cellc edge. well roaming on vodacom fixes that too.

Nope no limitations at all. Been forced roaming since the 20th and it's been a joy to use a Cellc sim again. Wow no dropped calls at all. Very decent data speeds in most locations.

Hi HideInLight

No limitations at all, however Cell C offers better network reception in some areas and it is only wise to use the better network which would then be Cell C.

Just something interesting I picked up. Cellc only roams on a maximum of hsdpa even if the tower supports dc-hsdpa and lte...

I noticed now that a vodacom sim will connect via dc-hsdpa and get speeds of 24Mbps where my Cellc sim when roaming on Vodacom only gets like 14Mbps max connecting to hsdpa.

You will have to keep switching back and forth (between manual and auto). And yes that will be just about all extra charge/cost you will incur - the act of switching :)
