Hi guys

I'm going off to the UK (and then on to the USA) in November.

I use a Sony Xperia C dual sim phone.

I am on Cell C Top-Up Prepaid (monthly contract) on sim1, and sim2 is a 200MB per month Cell C sim.

I was wondering if there is any advice on how to significantly reduce costs while travelling in either of these countries?

For one, I would like to enable SMS roaming (if that is available on Cell C) and disable everything else.

I can do this on the phone but it's more of an inconvenience than setting the facility via Cell C to ensure I have maximum protection from unwanted bills!

Double check if you allowed roaming, some networks don't let you on topup even though its a contract. Then honestly getting a sim card in each country ends up cheaper. Best you can do is may get someone to keep your sim card in SA and activate forwarding to each sim card you use on journeys.....but probably better to get a sim card with data in each country and use something like whatsapp!

I would just buy a prepaid sim card overseas and use that instead.
Recently went to the UK and bought a prepaid sim card for 10 Pounds (roughly R200) that gives you 1000min, 1GB data.

Whatsapp still works, so friends and family contact me that way, so no unwanted shocks at the end of the month.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I had also left a message with Cell C and they replied - prepaid Cell C (even TopUp contracts) don't work overseas; they just die "when you land". So that protects me from heavy roaming charges. However, I will be golden with Wi-Fi, so thanks for the advice.

I am not an active Whatsapp user but IIRC it used to synchronise your address with your phone number so if you change SIM won't your number change and render you unreachable overseas?

Hi Brattex

Thank you for posting to us.

Unfortunately we do not have the option for SMS roaming only. The services is also only available on Postpaid lines.

We can assist by migrating you to a lower package.

If you are interested, please PM your contact details & number in question.

Regards
