Cape Town – Tourists wanting to visit the landmark Robben Island have had anything but a smooth ride, after the Susan Kruger ferry suffered a malfunction with its radar, motored past the island and had to be rescued.

Times Live reports the skipper responsible for the latest incident is a former domestic cleaner who is facing a formal investigation into her navigational abilities.

The latest maritime malfunction, said to be one of a long list over the last couple of yeats, has prompted concern that skipper Joyce Mtingeni might have been "fast-tracked'', despite not having the necessary skills. Other incidents reportedly include a ferry getting lost in the fog and a skipper being so drunk he could barely stand.

Tourism stakeholders have expressed alarm, stating that people are being put at risk and all that was needed was for “another Hout Bay incident to happen”. A boat capsized three years ago, claiming two lives.

A spokesperson for Robben Island Quinton Mtyala confirmed that Mtingeni was suitably qualified with a certificate of competency from the SA Maritime Safety Authority.

the Susan Kruger getting lost comes on the back of an underwater survey of Robben Island's Murray's Bay Harbour, which shows that an outcrop of rocks has been repeated damage to the R26 million Sikhululekile tourist ferry.

IOL reports the previous Robben Island Museum management was not aware of the rocky outcrops in Murray’s Bay harbour, therefore they failed to commission a ferry with a shallow draught.

You just can't make up quality schyte like this.

You must be kidding me, a ousie take tourists from CPT harbour to Robben Island, then she gets lost? How the hell, you can see Robben Island from here, it's line of sight, not if she takes you to some coastal town up the south coast.

I think I've heard everything now. I definitely don't want her cleaning my flat, maybe my dishwasher would get lost.

It's only tourists...pfft.

I blame apartheid (why did the regime put it in such a difficult to find spot?).

Tourists got a much longer ride than they paid for. They got more bang for their buck

Could have ended up in Cote d'Ivoire.

It raises the question if the certificate of competency is sufficient to validate the skipper’s proficiency.
When cutting corners in tourism with inadequately trained staff you will lose your reputation and returning guests.

How do you miss Robben Island? You shouldn't even need a radar to get there.

Aye Cap'n, these bartsards will steal anything thats not tied down ..... First they stole the mainland, now the damned Island....

/Indian Mynah shytes on mans coat and cries Poly wants a cracker ..... boat steams off into the great grey yonder .....

The quality of the article is as bad as the navigational abilities of the skipper, was the journalist also fast tracked?

I know it's fixed now after being pointed out in the articles comment section, but still...
