Aggravated robberies declined by over 40 percent during the festive season, the directors-general for the justice, crime prevention and security cluster said in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Maybe they were to busy parting from all the stuff from the year before.

South Africa can no longer claim the dubious title of murder centre of the world.

But although most categories of crimes are decreasing, the general public is more afraid now than seven years ago.

According to the most recent Interpol statistics, the average murder rate for the 111 countries referred to on their website is eight per 100 000.

With 43 murders per 100 000 people in 2003/04 - or 20 000 a year - South Africa has fallen to third place in the world murder rate stakes.

Two or three years ago, I rememebr being told that it costs fifty rand to keep a prisoner in prison per day - so if someone has the number of prisoners we can work out what it costs

I 'thought' the figure was more like R175 a day (or more.)

Yes the money may go back to the fiscus (the unspent millions) but an overall budget of 9 billion, where does that all go?

Also I notice these prisons plans go back to 2002. How many jobs would be created if government simply delivered (instead of obfuscating: as you love to do?)
