A shoot-out ensued when a gang of 15 robbers armed with AK-47s broke into Hyde Park shopping centre, north of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

"Around 4.30am, about 15 suspects broke the security door at the entrance and entered the shopping centre. They shot at security guards who shot back at them," said Inspector Moses Maphakela.

"The suspects managed to break into a shop and took clothing; at the moment we don't know how much the clothing is worth."

Maphakela said while some gang members were breaking into the shop, others were firing shots at the security guards.

"The police are searching for 15 suspects; these people are armed with AK-47s, R5s and pistols."

They sped off in a silver Mercedes Benz, of which the back windscreen was shot to pieces by security guards, a white Ford Fiesta, a Honda Ballade and a white double-cab Ford Ranger.

Nobody was injured in the shoot-out.
 
Not one of the 15 got shot?
Can no one shoot straight in this country?
 
Just give the security guards a BFG and then see how long any attackers will last. That may be the only thing that will stop armed robbers like this in our country.

And according to the Stats SA. Most security gaurds have a criminal record, so you do not acctually want to send them for target practice and have them use it against someone else.:(

It must be the same gang that robbed Woodmead shop a while ago (about 25 robbers). I believe these guys work for a syndicate who organizes them.

I am not entirely convinced it is easy to shoot accurately when you are being fired at with r5's and ak's. Also i bet those security guards had some pistols or something stupid.
 
If those security guards were properly trained by their security company then this showdown would have ended ALOT differently.

+1 for their valiant bravery though.

I was referring to both sides, not that anyone wants the people risking their lives to protect us and our assets getting shot, but ~20 people firing at eachother and not 1 hit sounds a bit weird

and these are the kinds of incidents that the SAPS should be able to respond to while the suspects are on the scene, surely the security company has radio's linked to SAPS?

Heard on the radio they broke into the Armani store and stole clothes. This is def strange. I dont see them being able to sell it for cash very easily. Something like jewelry is much easier to turn into cold hard cash.

Maybe they just needed some nice outfits for the festive season.
 
Something is a bit off here. whoever organized this did a poor job, it doesn't really make sense... 15 armed guys... to steal some clothes? what kind of pay-off does that leave them with? and what's left for the organizer(s)? the cars are probably all stolen, so it just seems like a lot of work and risk for not a lot of pay-off.
UNLESS... the media are being fed nonsense because stores/shopping malls don't want to reveal the true losses and encourage more of similar crimes.

Yea i rate while 5 okes were stealing clothes and shooting at guards the other 10 were probably robbing a Jewelery store or something :P

The jewelry stores (I think there is just one, and a watch shop) lock their stuff away at night. I'd think that Hyde Park would be the last place you'd want to hit - it is really difficult to get in and out in a hurry. I think that there is more behind this - I think the criminals are testing reaction time and will probably be hitting another shopping centre in the area soon.

They said nobody was injured. Doesn't mean they weren't shot.....
