Johannesburg - A Roodepoort cyclist and her training partner were attacked and robbed of their bicycles, it was reported on Friday.

The bicycle-jacking took place on Ontdekkers Road, about 200 metres from the Hendrik Potgieter Crossing on Thursday, Beeld newspaper reported.

Christa Botha, 48, and Barend Burger, 36, said they followed their regular route along the N1, cycling towards Johannesburg. They turned back early to avoid bad weather.

"Barend was in front of me. A man walked in front of him. I didn't suspect anything, and tried to overtake them, but another man appeared and pushed me right off my bicycle," Botha said.

The two criminals pointed firearms at Botha and Burger. They stole both bicycles, together worth around R90 000, Burger's cellphone and Botha's GPS.

George Corbett, chairperson of Central Gauteng Cycling, said several such crimes had been reported in the same area during the past 18 months, and that the only way to avoid bicycle-jacking was to cycle in large groups.

R45000 for a bicycle? WTF is that thing made of gold or something? My R2000 mountain bike works just fine. Is a 48 year old woman going to compete professionally?

That's still cheap for a good bike. What's the cost of the bike got to do with the theft? If that's your passion then spending that amount is nothing. How much does a good set golf golf clubs cost?

R2000? Does it have a big front wheel and a little one at the back?

R45 000 is a lot, but not the most you could pay.

People, are we allowed to portray the new South Africa in a bad light? Some oversee tourists might visit this forum and notice the crime rate! And then they might decide not to come visit and we need their money sooo badly.
1. No tourists no money.
2. No money no jobs.
3. No jobs even more crime.
4. More crime less tourists.
5. Go back to step one . . .

Your kidding right? I'd rather they know whats really going on here and would also advise them to not visit!

@Greg You quoted me before I could wipe my nose :) I really think we should hide the crime rates like we did during Fifa-2010. Man it was so nice to read a newspaper and not see crime stories in it :D

That's the most brain dead thing I've ever heard. No use in hiding your head in the sand and hoping it will all go away.

Oh no, they might realize reality! Wouldn't want that! If foreign investment declines, the gov might actually start functioning since all they care about is money anyway.

They'll probably sell the bicycles for R200 each. We need visible policing, I say give cops bicycles and this will discourage thieves. These days you can't even read something on your iPad inside shopping malls because once you come out they'll pounce on you.

Quite sad! For those who comment on the price each for there own i know my dads two bikes where just under 200k, but when you have a passion and the cash then you can justify it!

Same as people who spend loads of cash on tech, some people just dont understand it! Some people like tech, others bikes, others cameras, blablabla.

The only way? Shooting them in the head is another way for one.

Nothing new, as a Rock/Surf fisherman I hear of guys getting held up at gunpoint/shot/stabbed for their rods and gear, a good set-up will cost R7k +. Pretty sad that I need to have a weapon just to go fishing these days !
