Two robbers, posing as census workers, held up two men in Kensington, Johannesburg on the first day of the national census, according to a report on Tuesday.
The incident happened on Monday, when Godwin Symons and a friend, Raymond Sassu, were busy having lunch at a house in Kitchener Avenue.
Symons said the doorbell rang and two men in green jackets told him over the intercom they were census workers, according to Beeld newspaper.
He opened the gate.
“One of the men pointed a pistol at me. Raymond came out of the kitchen where we were eating and they ordered him to his knees and tied him up.”
The men stole a firearm, four Kruger Rands, about R5 000 in cash and a laptop. One of the men kicked Sassu and pointed a firearm at him, but Symons said he shouted in isiZulu, “Don't shoot! Don't shoot!”
The men ran away after firing a shot at Symons. He was unhurt.
Census workers wear yellow jackets and ID tags. Members of the public can call 0800-110-248 to verify the enumerators' identities. - Sapa

And they wonder why the public are so paranoid about opening the gate to the real census workers!

Do they only come during the week? what are their hours? guess i won't be counted

If they want anything from me they'll have to stand on the other side of the gate. I'm not allowing anyone in!

Like we didn't see this coming. There is not a chance i will let them into my house, they can stand at the outside gate and stare into the faces of my 4 dogs while i quickly give them the answers they want and the can be on their way.

I am Jack's [-]raging bile duct[/-] complete lack of surpise.

they came to my house yesterday afternoon. i refused them entry to my property on the grounds of my pitbull. he wasn't letting anyone onto the property. i gave them the count of the people living on the property. they wanted me to take the form and they said they would come back and collect it, i said no, the count is 4. they then said i was to sign a form of refusal to which i replied, i will not sign the form as i did not refuse to give you the count of FOUR living here buh bye.

Good for you.
No reason why we should give them any other information.

I think it's simple really. Don't be an ****** about it. You can verify their identity easily.

I think we will be seeing more and more of these stories over the next few weeks..

I won't even be going to my gate... they can ask their questions through the intercom....

I cant hear people on the intercom because of my dogs barking when anyone approaches. Did they think that all South Africans were going to listen to them when they state in their ad "let them into your home" i loled the 1st time i heard that.

What leads you to believe that you need only give the number of people residing there?

which one is quicker pooky? the verifying of the ID or them holding you up at gun point? i think it's the latter. before you will be able to pick up the phone to dial "verification" that gun is at your head ok. so don't be a fool and play it safe and don't let anyone in even if they are the real census 2011 people. hold up your hand from the safety of your veranda with the count of your fingers and they can count your fingers. NOT your middle finger :D
