Robbers pose as census workers

I always thought that the collection of census information was anonymous. Managed to get the census form from the Census site and saw that they collect names of all people living at a residence, DOB, income as well as auxiliary information such as if the household has TV, laptops, broadband etc. Considering the crime-situation this is rather concerning if this information leaks and is used by criminals as "intel" - you live alone, your house is worth 2m, you have TV/laptop/broadband and your income is in the high income bracket --- wonder how well people will sleep going forward.

Didn't you know this census's only purpose is to plan for the great uhuru?
 
Methinks the census is a complete waste of time, the person who came to our house was all but illiterate, had no idea how the form worked and was generally clueless as to what was going on. I very much doubt based on what I saw the entire batch of forms she is responsible for is going to even make it to where they need to go. Never mind the fact that she only got info about 1 of the people in my house and promised to come back for the other persons info without leaving a form. So in my particular case of being counted the Govt at BEST will get 50% of my household info right. I would imagine 0 -10% of what was communicated will actually make it into any kind of database

Agreed. You don't have to let them in, in fact don't let any strangers into your house, don't pick up hitch hikers, don't walk around by yourself in dodgy areas... common sense. Worrying that the census worker is going to come back later and clean you out is a bit silly.

I don't think anyone is worried about the census workers themselves coming back. There's a lot they can do with that info that is outside the scope of the census process and let's face it -- it would not be unreasonable to suspect that some of these people may use that info for more sinister purposes. After all, everyone involved would simply deny it and that would be the end of it anyway.
 
If only these censuserers who pitch up unannounced did so with a six-pack of bitterly cold Windhoeks under their arm like my mates do

Well then the police will have a very lead if you get robbed after taking part in the census.

I can guarantee that almost EVERY house in my street contain LCD/Plasma TV's, laptops, PC's, DVD players etc and burglars know this...They do not need census information to gather that.

Some people get a new Plasma and then neatly put the box next to their bin outside their property. Nice advertising eh?
 
Get someone in the house to video tape the proceedings "for quality purposes" mind you.
