Robbers pose as census workers

they came to my house yesterday afternoon. i refused them entry to my property on the grounds of my pitbull. he wasn't letting anyone onto the property. i gave them the count of the people living on the property. they wanted me to take the form and they said they would come back and collect it, i said no, the count is 4. they then said i was to sign a form of refusal to which i replied, i will not sign the form as i did not refuse to give you the count of FOUR living here buh bye.

In all fairness, they have many more questions than just "how many folks are living here" !

I can guarantee that almost EVERY house in my street contain LCD/Plasma TV's, laptops, PC's, DVD players etc and burglars know this...They do not need census information to gather that.

Some people get a new Plasma and then neatly put the box next to their bin outside their property. Nice advertising eh?

Dude you need to move - you are surrounded by Darwin nominees. You may just get taken out by just being too close to them :s You would be surprised what you can find in some homes - I have been in multmillion rand homes with a little 54cm tv and a single second hand couch in a huge living room. On the other hand I have been to a small little bachelor pad with close to R500k worth of computer equipment. Criminals know this....

Well then the police will have a very lead if you get robbed after taking part in the census.

Sure they would. They would shrug their shoulders and tell you there's no way to prove it. Even when you've had a home invasion by a gang and your one and only lead is that you happen to know the exact ATM and time that your money was withdrawn (ie. the bastards would have appeared on candid camera), you'll be hard pressed to get the cops to even follow up. Believe me, I know.

They came to our house yesterday and left the form - but asked to only fill in with pencil?

The problem for the government is they can't use black, seeing as that refers to the Chinese, Indians, coloureds and others in equity references.

Well, they have used black but only as black African - so if you are black and not from Africa, you are what? And what if you are chinese and from Africa, or coloured and not? Or do we assume that only blacks are from Africa (whether they are or not) and everyelse is from somewhere else.

Just something else - should you have a live in maid, you don't count her. She gets to fill in her own form but claims your property as her dwelling.

They left the SO with a form. IT says the form should be completed by the head of the household (I assume me but I'll get permission first:)) and I don't have a 2HB pencil. I do have a black pen. I also don't believe everything I am told, and am even less likely to believe anything someone else is told.

Hmmm interesting, just got my papers last night... they just came to the gate and handed it to me without any me saying anything saying they will pick em up tonight....

Yes they where in the right attire and could produce ID's. I guess enough people in my area blocked them from entering that they just give out the form at the gates and leave.

Doing the maths, there are 155,000 odd fieldworkers covering around 50,000,000 people in 34 days (including the mop up period)

That's 322 people per field workers, that works out to 10 people a day. That must be quite easy in the resedential areas but geez I wouldn't like to be the one who has to go to all those desolate farms in the NW.

Incedentally, Canada are having a census this year, the census packages are delivered to each household.

The form does say that it should be completed in pencil - it doesn't say what hardenss or softness - just a pencil. Pen is not mentioned.

What, so the answers can be rubbed out and replaced with what the government want to publish as census truth? If I'm able to fill in answers myself I'm using a pen.

33. Can the questionnaire be filled in with a black pen?
Yes, black pens and dark (2HB) pencils may be used. All other colours do not show clearly when the questionnaires are scanned, and the questionnaires will then be regarded as spoilt.
We prefer that the questionnaire be completed in pencil; that way, if an error is made, it can easily be rectified. If you write in pen, make an error and scratch it out and write the answer elsewhere, the questionnaire is regarded as spoilt.

Interesting rumour going around concerning the use of pencils for this Census. It is in the interest of BCM to alter the forms and to "increase" the number of occupants living in the BC area because then they stand a chance of becoming a Metro, which means greater money grants (and increase in salaries for BCM?). Just a rumour ............

What I see It is total nonense that an enumerator must correct mistakes. How will thay know what is correct or incorrect?? I agree, something smells fishy!!!

To Vuvu Vena of DD: Kindly find out why pencils are being used for this census. i know that it is not compulsory. The enumerator that called on us was quite willing to use a ballpoint pen instead. thank you

Tronn - same here told me have to use pencil so that mistakes can be erased. Well as you say saw one sitting on gutter surrounded by 'completed' forms - asked her what she was doing and she said " just checking that all the answers are correct on the forms that are completed" - how would she know if the answers are correct or not. This whole census could turn out to be a total farce

The census officials started off by explaining how the process worked . The questionnaire was filled in using a pencil and completed in less than an hour. Why use pencils? Census enumerators have been spotted sitting on corners rubbing out the details that had been entered on Census forms. We insisted on filling in the forms with a black ballpoint pen. Nobody objected.

Mate of mine from PE reckons there was an article in one of their local papers about a crim who didn't make his aggravated robbery court appearance because he was attending censureserer training.
Quite scary that the fskr wasn't screened before ... especially considering the type of crime he was busted for.

I am not arguing with anyone about pen or pencil I am just saying that the census form itself says complete using a pencil.

A 4H pencil is a pencil and it quite likely to make nice holes in the form

My Census form said "2HB Pencil".

Not sure if I must be honest but it would be nice to know the demographics of SA.

I'm also getting sick of demographics, race and all that crap. It only fuels propaganda machine of the government and allows them to play the race card, nothing else.
