Robbers prefer R10.00 over iPhone

Four gun toting robbers who held up a man and his daughter in Durban refused an iPhone but instead took her handbag containing a paltry R10, the Mercury newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The pair were accosted in broad daylight as the man dropped off his 19-year-old daughter at an ice cream shop in Durban's Florida Road where she worked.

Three men, two of whom carried firearms, demanded cash.

They seized her small bag and hit the man over the head before firing about four shots into the air and fleeing in their getaway car -- a black Mercedes Benz with blue police lights.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker and Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson confirmed the attack.

Naicker told the newspaper a case of attempted murder and robbery was being investigated.

Yep and they're smart enough to know that iPhones can be tracked.

No doubt Apple bashing to follow but my take... Tech savvy robbers.
I used Find My Phone to track my stolen iPhone to a shack in Diepsloot, cops it tow, and recovered it. Arrests were made. On another occasion, I lost the phone, logged on and tracked it to the Nichol off ramp in the N1. Called but got no answer so I sent a text from Find My Phone that I was tracking the phone and I'd be bricking it if the new "owner" didn't answer, meet me and hand over the phone, no questions asked... Got my phone back from a homeless guy who'd picked it up.
Smartphones are useless to thieves, more than useless, they can be a real risk to steal... Smarter to take the 10 bucks... Pity some of them are catching on.

Assault with a deadly weapon and the gun was pointed at them. Quite frankly the heavier the charges the better. DP would even be better than that.

They also may have thought she had cash for the store in the bag.

The value of the items in the handbag is generally around R500 (give or take) to the owner of the Handbag... R0 to the person who steals it...

It costs money to replace a drivers license and an ID Book.. neither of which are actually useful or valuable to the general thief.
