Robot kills man at VW

UK journalist Sarah O'Connor, who has the same name as Terminator actor Sarah Connor

Whoever wrote the article in the OP hasn't watched it either it seems.

The 22-year-old was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said.
Is it normal for workers to enter the cage areas to fix or to program the machines?

Rule no. 1 - do not enter a cage, you just don't know what is sitting there waiting for you.
The FT says VW has stated the robot did not suffer a technical defect, but that the deceased worker entered the protective cage in which the machine sits.

If you work in a production facilty there are various lockouts and tagouts that you have to follow before entering a robot cell.
In order for this guy to have been hurt it means he breached probably a minimum of 4 safety relays be it light curtains, safety relays on the gate which there are normally 2 as well as the sensor within the cell.

This is total human error and he is entirely to blame.
Had he only got hurt he would have been dismissed anyway.

Looks like they will have to implement the 3 laws of robotics.

Reminds me of this...

I have heard stories like this since high school...

Employees getting rolled out 20cm thick after not paying attention and falling into the cold rolling mill...
Employees losing fingers and limbs because instead of paying attention to the press and using safety procedures, prefer to chat and gossip with other workers...

These just off the top of my head...

And then there was the accident at the one company I worked for...
Root cause after investigation: employee negligence...

20cm??
That's not a very good mill.

Try 0.5cm after being squashed by a 1500ton press.
Only legs left sticking out.
And why did this happen?
Maintenance manager decided it was ok to remove a safety relay in front of the press so they cycled it while I guy was busy working on it.

Yeh dude, I watched a women who had worked at the same plant for 12 years reverse off a dock.
They helped her out of the fork lift and asked what happened, she said she did not realize there was a dock there.

I told her supervisor that her inability to not use a cellphone while operating a dangerous piece of machinery was to blame and not her apparent loss of memory after 12 years of service on the same damn site.
The cameras verified my story and she was fired.

Countless times I had to jump a safety railing to avoid her.

Condolences to the worker's family though :(

PS :

:D:D:D:D

John Mathan and Rebecca Davis on Cape Talk today had one big laugh about this.... she's usually so sensitive and Jon usually shows concern. Here neither of these intellectuals gave a frack that a real human being died and his family no doubt have a bad time right now. But laughter ensued. A pure comedy gold mine.
