i remember watching somthing on bbc about the british raptor uav being used in afghanistan while its being controlled by a few people from a air force base in texas by a satelite

What is the purpose of a soldier in the battlefield?

It is to reduce the enemy force and control the battlefield. How does he do that effectively, by causing the enemy to react to his actions and to force the enemy to use up his resources. Robots are ideal to do this, because of their ability to work with out rest, and having no emotional needs, they are unaffected by psychological poisons that infect human soldiers.

If we need robots in the battlefield, I suggust put the battle in TV game / internet.

dispute countries send their terms in the place called "virtual battle field", The warriors and fighters (players) sit in battle against each other. Have fun.

If we allow robots then we better make sure we don't piss off the east again.

All I know, in the battflefield, a robot vs human, he will get romped

Not really, if you can anticipate the command tree of the robot, you can win. Move over rubble and rough terrain, attack with sun or fires behind you. Combined multiple attacks will cause a slow down in the robot decision process. And there is always the bullet versus armour method, where ordnance will always win against armour, if applied in large amounts.

Why would a robot get romped?

A robot that is bullet proof and semi rocket proof will take a human and crush it.

Not sure how a heavily armoured robot would lose to a human but anyhow.

I guess it depends whose side you're on in a given situation, but it's worth remembering that only an extremely rich power would be able to afford this tech.

It would be nice if we could solve our differences by sending our machines to destroy each other, instead of our children, but I don't think that's ever going to happen.

Besides do we really want to make robots capable of war?

Most software has bugs, so imagine buggy war robot soldiers, damn could end badly.

Imagine if they could think for themselves as well. Terminator here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!

Throw your tank manual in the fire.

If I support my countries war, then I will support the use of robots to main the enemy or at the least kill them off.

Who is the enemy if I may ask ?
I mean your enemy ?
Who do you despise enough to want to kill ? :p

Yes, humans will eventually be excluded from war in physical presence.

War is no longer about killing people, it's about bringing weaker nations who don't agree with your policies to their knees through economic collapse.
Firepower and a bit of on the ground war, hastens this economic collapse, quickly making the 'enemies' very highly priced resources available.

War in the past was blatantly killing, the current wars are a mixture of a bit of firepower and economic blackmail, the near future wars will be/are a combination of the previous era and add to that the biological warfare angle and the robotic angle.

So war in the future will still kill people, but not directly, it could be either very swiftly through a targeted sterilisation process - weapon from space, or more devious - biological weapons, time delayed or not, or through robots.

What fuel does a tank use to operate ?
Forget about anything fossil fuel driven
- future military tech will not have those.

Think hitek: plasma, magnetics, sound, nano, robotics, lasers, and chemical and biologicals.

War is nasty and I don't support the concept in this modern age, where we all realise the earth is one small little planet, but it is our only home (well.. within reasonable distance).
However I admit that war is a part of the process towards reaching the ultimate goal which is that we have a global culture where we all embrace the differences that unite us into a vibrant and modern humanity with fantastic technology and creative potential.

Men and boys should stop seeing the soldier as the archtypical example of manliness and action horror/excitement, humans are engineers, we have an uncanny ability to design and engineer on many different levels, this is where the action is going to be in the future.

I imagine a far future where we will build constructions in space that will be bigger and more complex than our solar system itself.

Look at our ancient history, look at the pyramids, ziggaruts, look at our bridges, space station, skyscrapers, towers, we have what it takes to make the whole universe our creative playground.

Old habits die hard. The habit of war in the history of humanity will linger still for a while,
and I don't know what can be done to ever get control of the machine of war on which so much of the global economy depends.

We are building our civilisation around the concept of fear.
Fear of an enemy.
The enemy is ourselves of course - but few have the insight to realise that.
it is part of our destructive and curious childhood as a specie

Reasons for war are many and vary through the different ages of civilisation, and we are at the beginning of the Electronic Revolution, and at the beginning of the Resource Wars, so yes, electronics & technology will definately be the sciences that wins future wars.

Big hardware is out of date - throw your tank manual into the fireplace, and read about nanotech applications and the coming wetware era.

Just a thought.. what do you think ?

The same sort of thing happened at the Bloemfontein army base didn't it? Some sort of Anti-Air turret thing went crazy and killed a couple of people. IIRC, they blamed some bug in the system.... or was it human error?

I think the anti-air weapon misfire had other influences in it.

But Wrathex, remember to throw your tank manual away, AFTER I have thrown mine away:D

The thing that makes killing people remotely bad is that like aerial bombardment, it removes the severity of killing people. I know the usual people will say 'well the terrorists don't mind why should i' but then that's what the difference is. By removing it you basically stripping the last bit of hesitance people have and making war more clinical? i.e. less dealing with the aftermath.

For a start humans must have final say in the machines actions.

Pros

Less stress on the soldier. Removing the stress of "one bullet away from death" will improve decision making.
Removal of other physical stresses like temperature that impairs decision making.
No experiencing fellow soldiers getting severely wounded or killed.
All those factors will lead to lessoning the chance for error in a fight.

Also the video feed from the machine can be recorded in case of an incident occurring that requires investigation.

Remember its probably easier to hack into a robot that "wirelessly" getting commands than to a human who knows to distinguish right from wrong, and can improvise in tough situations.
Regardless, I vote Robots be used in wars, or rather have virtual wars, as someone suggested earlier......... The less human loss the better.

humans will never be completely removed from war. we like it too much......
