I want to start a thread for the rock climbers in South Africa. Lets chat about the best places to go, best exercises to do and where to get the cheapest gear.

Ill start. I stay in Krugersdorp, Gauteng and the closest place I can get climbing gear is at Wonderwall. Me and my mates climb every weekend, mostly at Strubens Valley but the best place I went to for climbing so far is The Chosspile at Hartebeespoort dam. Lots of easy and difficult climbs at Chosspile but the walk up to the climbs is quiet long and rough.

Not yet no. want to go there when I have time off from work. Been to Fern Kloof too. Gonna go back there in summertime and take a dip in the water between the kloof. Beautiful place!

Magiliesburg. There's lots of kloofs with excellent rock and it's probably less than a hour from where you are.

Could you name a few please? and how much it costs etc.

where can i join up with MCSA?

Is the climbing place still on Obz? I still wanna give it a try...

Obz?

anyway. where can we find the cheapest gear?

Legoland in Montagu also have some nice long single pitch climbs.

One of the best places ATM is Tranquilitas in Waterval boven.

What a good time to start this thread. I just got back from my first climbing session in months and boy, did it feel good!

Pity I'm so unfit after struggling with flu this whole winter.

when hanging by your finger tips on a rock somewhere, do you really want the cheapest

LOL...let me rephrase. Where can we look for the best priced gear. I dont want my pance pulled down over the prices.

Well I cant really complain. I bought my brothers gear from him and it was all still brand new. 60m 10.2mm beal rope. 2 black diamond harnases. 6 crabs. 4 slings. 2 pairs of shoes. 2 belay devices. 2 chalk bags and 2 quickdraws. all for R2300 LOL. What a bargain!

You definitely want to join the MCSA if you want to get to all the really great climbing spots. They also organise meets where you can climb with the experts and learn from them and explore new areas.

..

EDIT: Here's a pic of some rock climbers at what looks like Cedarberg Gorge for ya :D
