Roku3 and Netflix Bitrate

Hi guys I am experiencing a similar problem. Have a 4mb connection but I've concurrently monitored the bandwidth that netflix is using (on chrome browser) and the maximum bandwidth being used is 160kB/s. (On example short, I get to 750kbps for most of the clip, until the very end where it manages to get to 1280x720p)

Now I know my line can easily reach up to 400kB/s on other downloads (torrent, nntp).
When downloading on http I can only get up to 400kB/s when using a download manager.

Is there something wrong with my internet connection? I am on a 4mb gamers king uncapped account from openweb.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Are You using Unotelly?

What speeds do you get on international speed tests?

I am indeed using Unotelly.

Thanks for the heads up on the international speed tests - looks like it seems to be the culprit here, have opened up a ticket with openweb

Heres some nice info for Netflix and Bitrates

2.610 – 5800 Kbps (1920 x 1080, 1:1)
1.935 – 4300 Kbps (1920 x 1080, 1:1)
1.732 – 3850 Kbps (1920 x 1080, 1:1)
1.350 – 3000 Kbps (1280 x 720, 1:1)
1.057 – 2350 Kbps (1280 x 720, 1:1)
0.787 – 1750 Kbps ( 720 x 480, 32:27)
0.472 – 1050 Kbps ( 640 x 480, 4:3)
0.337 – 750 Kbps ( 512 x 384, 4:3)
0.252 – 560 Kbps ( 512 x 384, 4:3)
0.169 – 375 Kbps ( 384 x 288, 4:3)
0.106 – 235 Kbps ( 320 x 240, 4:3)

Column 1 is the amount of GBs per hour required for video (add .0864 GB/hr for 5.1 and .0432 GB/hr for stereo sound).
Column 2 is the bitrate.
Column 3 is the resolution
Column 4 is the pixel aspect ratio

Also, the "Playback Settings" for your Netflix account does affect the playback on the Roku.

Options
Auto
Low (basic video quality, up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Medium (standard video quality, up to 0.7 GB per hour)
High (best video quality, up to 3 GB per hour for HD, 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD)

So go here and click the "Playback Settings" link and choose "High". If its set to "Low" or "Medium", it will affect the quality coming through through to your Roku. I am not sure how well "Auto" works, but I set mine to "High", because I a hardcore!!!

Haha, thanks! Yeah, I've already set it the Playback settings to high. Definitely looks like an ISP issue though.

@ChocolateBear, open up a free Afrihost 1GB account and show OpenWeb the difference but i have a feeling they may advise to change packages. Keep us updated nevertheless.

:)

Have you sorted you quality issue out?

Reason I am asking is because I have been experimenting with the quality settings and have discovered that using the MEDIUM settings is actually quite good for the bandwidth used. I would say that MEDIUM is way better than DSTV SD in terms of quality nad clarity, but not as good as DSTV HD but not far off.
