Roku3 and Netflix Bitrate

Any other members of the 5800 club?

@Zoidberg: If you open the streaming menu from a web browser (Alt-Shift-LMB) do you get additional speeds listed above 3000?
 
@Yotch, i don't know what the PS4 sees but am guessing 3000+ as it looks near BD quality on our 10Mbps line.

Just tried now on Chrome browser and 3000 is Max available. Think SuperHD on PC is only available via the Win8 app.

On the PS4 it goes almost instantly into HD (can't say if SuperHD as we got 1080i/720p TV) :p but definitely clean looking. Love the DD+ sound too. Am sure will work with all dns/vpn providers now too. Unblock-US is what i am using now.

Click your right analog stick, will give you the current resolution.

I haven't seen more than 480P though, but that still looks pretty damn fine to me.
 
@Yuu: When you get a chance please try to stream that Netflix US clip Example Short 23.976 on your PS4 and watch the yellow bitrate number in the top left of the screen to see if ever goes above 3000kbps.
 
I will test this morning and have some results around 11am. :) Thanks for the tips.
 
Here are my results. Running the Netflix test stream on a 4mbps ADSL line. Looks like it is using the max speed available on my line. Not sure what that works out to in resolution from Netflix.

Tested and it took awhile but was at a constant 3000kbps and i think this maybe due to me not having a 1080p TV. I even set the PS4 on 1080i and nothing higher.

I have no idea how the hell you okes get bitrates.

What line speed and ISP are you on?

Mine doesn't to over 720 something at 480p since I've found this thread and started checking.

I did the right analog stick in as suggested and it shows on the screen for the PS4.

On PC , i used Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S and i choose manual then 3000.

Going to test Unotelly later as i see their JHB dynamo server went live 2 days ago :D. Am in DBN so hope we next. Might make a diff. Atleast CTN and JHB are sorted in that respect but want to see what performance it gives for me.

Line Speed - 10MB line (hoping April upgrade for 20/40 comes through) :)

I don't think having a local DNS server should make any difference at all to the streaming speed.

Surely once the IP lookup is done they stream from the exact same place.

It's not like they are caching the content.

But the 10Mb line explains a whole lot. I'm on a 4mb restricted account syncing at 5mb.
 
Agree, DNS won't make a difference. Streaming via VPN it will make a difference. If your speed to the VPN is quicker than your speed to the site you're streaming from, it might be quicker, but mostly it's limited by your speed to the VPN which is why UnoDNS is the way to go IMO.
 
Well seems I max out at 3000kpbs and 720P if I let it carry on for a minute or so which isn't half bad and exactly what I thought I was seeing.

Seems the built resolution indicator takes a bit longer than the bit rate one before it updates.
 
Well, i do agree with you guys but i seem to have found a difference. Using UnoTelly/UnoDNS, it actually streamed for me @ 1080p (3500kbps) & SuperHD (4000+ kbps?). This is somewhat pointless on our 720p tv (way cleaner looking admittingly) but it certainly made a difference and i have not seen it go higher using Unblock-US.

Although the Unblock-US site says that they do allow SuperHD to work, i have never seen this in my testing. Uno-DNS is certainly as has been said the way to go. It takes about 7mins to kick in but worth the wait if you an HD lover :D. Attached two pics.

Am glad i found this thread and hope it helps others to figure out where their bottleneck could be. Thanks guys.

7 Minutes is longer than I would have thought, but I've never tested it. Bottom line is don't expect bit rate to be top for a few minutes into the show.
 
Thanks Yuu, I'll have to give UnoTelly another try. I have never seen any bitrate exceeding 3000kbps on my 10Mbps line.

For me, assuming the line can handle it, it seems the bigger factor is the device that you are using to stream the content. As mentioned above, on a 4Mb line, I can happily stream 3000kbps on my laptop, but my Roku maxes out at 1750kbps. Same time of day, same ADSL line, came wired connection, same "movie"... Go figure... btw - I am also running Unotelly.

I managed to get up to 1280x720 at 2350kbps on Roku 3 after watching 8 minutes of example short. I'm on a 6MB line with MWeb uncapped.
 
The problem with Example Short 23.976 is that it is too short to properly test our poor quality lines. If you watch a Netflix movie on your PC and check the Stream Manager regularly with an Alt-Shift-LMB, are you still getting 2350kbps or quite a bit less? Once Example Short gets close to the end and finishes downloading the bitrate starts to increase which often isn't an accurate reflection of the bitrate that you'll experience when watching a 90 minute movie etc.

Hi guys I am experiencing a similar problem. Have a 4mb connection but I've concurrently monitored the bandwidth that netflix is using (on chrome browser) and the maximum bandwidth being used is 160kB/s. (On example short, I get to 750kbps for most of the clip, until the very end where it manages to get to 1280x720p)

Now I know my line can easily reach up to 400kB/s on other downloads (torrent, nntp).
When downloading on http I can only get up to 400kB/s when using a download manager.

Is there something wrong with my internet connection? I am on a 4mb gamers king uncapped account from openweb.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
