Sometimes It's hard to keep track, now you see a thread and now you don't, it has disappeared deep down and the are multiple threads you did not see 5 minutes ago on top. When that happens i just disappear to other subforums and only come back when i see we have some common interest on a particular thread.

And the name of Rolls-Royce's first SUV is...

Rolls-Royce Cullinan undergoing winter testing inside the Arctic Circle.
Goodwood, West Sussex - Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Project Cullinan, the all-new ‘high-bodied’ Rolls-Royce that was first announced in 2015 in the august pages of the Financial Times, is that Rolls-Royce refuses to call it an SUV.

“The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago,” commented chief executive officer Torsten Müller-Ötvös, confirming that the new diamond in the company’s crown would indeed be known as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

It won’t be badged as such however; no Rolls-Royce has ever carried a name or model badge. All you will find are discreet R/R logos on the radiator, boot, hubcaps and interior trim - which is perhaps the ultimate in automotive snobbery.

No drivetrain or technology details have yet been forthcoming from the Goodwood works; all we are told is that it is the second model to be built on the the company’s recently announced proprietary ‘Architecture of Luxury’ aluminium spaceframe, and that it will redefine luxury motoring by making it “Effortless, Everywhere”.

Which implies, at the very least, all-wheel drive and some measure of soft-road capability - although it would take a special class of driver to go bundu-bashing in a Rolls-Royce.

“It is the most fitting name for a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury,” said Müller-Ötvös.

“We were inspired by the epic processes, over many millennia, that went into the creation of the Cullinan Diamond. The name speaks of endurance in the face of great pressure, of rarity and great value, and, of course, of absolute luxury, wherever you venture in the world."

“The story of the largest diamond ever found, and how the nine flawless stones that were cut from it came to take their place in the English Crown Jewels, resonates in the adventurous spirit of The Honourable Charles Rolls and the absolute engineering integrity of Sir Henry Royce, the miller’s son who believed implicitly that ‘Whatever is rightly done, however humble, is noble’.”

Rolls-Royce Confirms SUV Will Be Called Cullinan

Cullinan was originally a code name for the first Rolls-Royce SUV ever made and now the manufacturer has confirmed that the name will be used on the production model.

The name comes from the Cullinan Diamond*, which is the the largest flawless diamond ever found, and RR compares the beauty and absolute solidity of the stone to it’s upcoming SUV.

Due to be revealed later this year, the Cullinan will be the second model based on the Rolls-Royce-exclusive aluminum spaceframe architecture that debuted last year so we can expect it to pack the 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12, which in the ultra-luxury sedan delivers 563 horsepower (420 kw) and 900 Nm (664 pound-feet) of torque. The Cullinan will feature a unique all-wheel-drive system, obviously

.”We were inspired by the epic processes, over many millennia, which went into the creation of the Cullinan diamond,” Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a statement. “The name embodies the many facets of our new motor car’s promise.”

*The 3,106-carat rock was dug up in 1905 in South Africa’s Magaliesberg Mountains and would later be split into nine separate pieces. The two largest of these feature in the crown and scepter of the British Crown Jewels.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan tests with production bodywork

The all-wheel-drive Bentley Bentayga rival, due to arrive this year, will be first Rolls-Royce SUV

Styling of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan will closely match that of the Phantom, shots of a development car undergoing winter testing confirm.

These new images come just days after Rolls-Royce confirmed that its first SUV, due to be unveiled this year, will be called the Cullinan. The Phantom's influence is clear to see, with a near-identical fascia at the front, and D-shaped taillights at the rear.

The Bentley Bentayga rival was labeled 'Project Cullinan' during its development, although the company maintained it had not decided upon a final model name.

The name is inspired by the Cullinan Diamond, a 3106-carat jewel extracted from a South African mine in 1905. It was split into nine stones, with the two largest portions used in the British Imperial Crown and the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross.

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Muller-Otvos said the Cullinan name had been “hiding in plain sight”, and added: “It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product.”

The Cullinan, which Rolls-Royce refers to as a 'high-sided vehicle' rather than an SUV, is likely to use a developed version of the Phantom’s 6.8-litre V12 engine. A plug-in hybrid powertrain could also be offered at a later stage, using technology from parent company the BMW Group. Rolls-Royce has dismissed the idea of a diesel option due to the comparative lack of refinement offered by such units.

The all-wheel-drive machine will also use the same aluminium spaceframe platform, named the 'Architecture of Luxury', as the Phantom.

The Cullinan has conducted an extensive testing and development programme, and was last year spotted at the Nürburgring.

The machine's boxy design takes after Rolls-Royce's flagship Phantom, as opposed to the smoother-looking Ghost. Spy shots also show that the rear doors of the Cullinan are rear-hinged, as seen on the Ghost and Phantom.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan to get pop-out seats in lower tailgate

The all-wheel-drive rival to Bentley Bentayga, due to arrive this year, is Rolls-Royce's first SUV

The reveal process of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan has begun, as the manufacturer has unveiled the car's pop-out, tailgate-mounted seats and table.

It's the latest in a slew of recent developments surrounding the Cullinan. Rolls-Royce confirmed the car's name earlier this month, while recent spy shots showed the Cullinan with the least disguise we've seen yet, revealing much of the Phantom-like look of the car.

Each of the pop-out seats, which are rear-facing and intended for use while the car is not in motion, bears the Rolls-Royce logo, and they both fold back into a compartment in the boot floor.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan tests to be broadcast on social media ahead of launch

The all-wheel-drive rival to Bentley Bentayga, due to arrive this year, is Rolls-Royce's first SUV

Rolls-Royce has revealed that it will publicise some of the most gruelling parts of the Cullinan's testing programme via a new deal with television channel National Geographic.

The luxury model, which has been testing for three years in Northern Europe, the Middle East and the United States, will be filmed and photographed as part of the partnership's The Final Challenge series, which will be posted onto social media.

The Cullinan, due for launch later this year, is claimed to mix ultra-luxury with genuine off-road ability.

Rolls-Royce unveiled the car's pop-out, tailgate-mounted seats and table recently, following confirmation of the car's name. Recent spy shots showed the Cullinan with the least disguise we've seen yet, revealing much of the Phantom-like look of the car.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan: Final Challenge - Episode 1

With development of the Cullinan, thc first SUV from Rolls-Royce, nearing its conclusion ahead of the car’s global debut later in 2018, the maker has teamed up with National Geographic and adventure photographer Cory Richards to get extra mileage (if you’ll forgive the worst pun ever published on IOL Motoring) out of the final series of durability tests.

As the Cullinan test mule tackles a series of of punishing terrains and altitude changes in the Highlands of Scotland, the gigantic dunes of the Arabian Desert, and the toughest landscapes in the United States, they’ll be publishing a series of videos by Richards entitled the final challenge, featuring the spectacular scenery and special people he meets along the way.

Whatever goes wrong - and something always does on an epic series of challenges such as this - it’ll all happen right in the public eye, and you’ll be able to see it here, starting right now.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV to be revealed on Thursday

Rolls-Royce has released a teaser pic of its first-ever SUV, the Cullinan, ahead of its global reveal that’s scheduled for this coming Thursday, around midday.

This teaser shot, along with the pictures of disguised prototypes revealed thus far, show that the Cullinan doesn’t make any radical styling departures from the Rolls-Royce status quo, sporting blocky lines reminiscent of the Phantom.

The Cullinan will be built around a new aluminium architecture, which will be shared with other Rolls-Royce products, and it will also feature a purpose-designed four-wheel-drive system.

Rolls-Royce isn’t saying much else about its new mud plugger, not least what will actually power it, although the firm’s familiar 6.6-litre V12 (which produces between 420kW and 465kW in other Rolls-Royce models) would be a logical choice.

Watch this thing become the luxury car of our time.

I can see it outselling both the Ghost and Phantom easily.

Wonder which rapper will have it first in their video, Drake? Kanye West? Both have albums dropping this year.

Say what you will, at this level of money, they forget design, it's all about Presence, Comfort and The Badge.
