Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV

Rolls-Royce first super-luxury SUV: 8 things you should know about the new Cullinan

Rolls-Royce Chief Executive Officer Torsten Müller-Ötvös will unveil the luxury automaker's first SUV, the Cullinan, today (May 10).

The name of the new SUV is linked to South Africa because the Cullinan was the name given to the largest diamond ever found. It was found at a mine in Gauteng in 1905.

SA connection

According to the company, the Cullinan was tested in the searing deserts of Africa and the Middle East to the freezing snows of the Arctic Circle; from the grassy glens of the Scottish Highlands to the towering canyons of North America.

Here's 8 things you should know about the new Cullinan:

1. It's named after the largest diamond ever discovered which now resides in the British Crown Jewels.
2. It's the second new Rolls-Royce to sit on the all-new aluminium ‘Architecture of Luxury’,
3. The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine delivers 420kW/850Nm mated to all-new all-wheel drive.
4. Tested to destruction all over the planet, Cullinan is an incredibly capable off-roader that sees the development of the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road enjoyment.
5. The first “three-box” car in the SUV-sector. Cullinan’s rear partition wall creates a distinct environment for passengers, separated from the luggage compartment.
6. Its an all-terrain high-bodied car for an “authentic, luxury off-road travel a reality for the first time” says Rolls-Royce
7. Contemporary and functional design ensures Cullinan gains iconic status in the face "of increasingly bland SUV designs" says the automaker.
8. Cullinan offers a suite of Bespoke features developed specifically for the many various lifestyles of its owners including the Viewing Suite and the Recreation Module.

Rolls-Royce reveals ultra-opulent Cullinan SUV

Knowing full well that the SUV avalanche is unstoppable, Rolls Royce has created its first ever mud-plugger, revealed in full on Thursday after a prolonged teaser campaign.

But the prestigious British carmaker is at pains to point out that this is no ordinary SUV, but rather the most luxurious and effortless off-road vehicle in the world.

Named after the world’s largest diamond, mined right here in South Africa, the Cullinan is the second Rolls Royce to sit on the firm’s all-new aluminium architecture, which has been specifically adapted to this application, along with the 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 420kW and 850Nm in this guise. Rolls Royce is not mentioning any acceleration figures as yet, but the electronically limited top speed is quoted at 250km/h, or “fast enough” as they would have put it in days gone by.

Rolls Royce claims it to be the first “three-box” vehicle in this sector, thanks to a glass partition wall that separates rear passengers from the luggage compartment, while also reducing cabin noise. With no detectable trace of snobbery, this configuration was “inspired by the age when one never travelled with one’s luggage,” says Rolls Royce.

Virtually every aspect of this vehicle has been created around maximising comfort - the self-levelling air suspension system even lowers the car by 40mm before occupants enter.

Things are, as you’d imagine, rather luxurious in the rear seating compartment, but here buyers do get to choose between a ‘Lounge seating’ configuration that caters for three rear passengers and a more opulent ‘Individual’ seating arrangement sporting two seats separated by a fixed console that incorporates a drinks cabinet with whisky glasses, champagne flutes and a refrigerator. Now that's the Rolls-Royce we're familiar with!

Those opting for the conventional Lounge seats still get the traditional SUV versatility perks, such as the ability to fold the rear seats flat (for a 1930 litre load capacity) when large objects need to be moved around - in this case likely a large and expensive painting from some exquisite gallery.

However, being the brand’s first-ever SUV, the Cullinan was designed to reach far more remote destinations that require tackling tough terrain (assuming that any owners would dare take such a machine over truly rough stuff). In the process it avoids bothering its driver with a large and distracting menu of driving modes - hence the ‘off-road’ button on the centre console, which sees to it that the Cullinan’s various dynamic systems are all adapted to the terrain at hand.

Those who’ve been following its developmental videos would also be well aware that the Cullinan has been torture-tested on various terrains across the globe. It can plunge through deep water too, thanks to a class-leading wading depth of 540mm.

As for gadgets, the Cullinan is offered with the marque’s latest range of infotainment systems, as well as a 7x3 high-res head-up display, a four-camera ‘panoramic-view’ monitor as well as Night Vision and Vision Assist, including Wildlife and Pedestrian Warning.

“The launch of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the luxury industry,” said Rolls Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

“Today we are setting a new standard by creating a new class of motoring and motor car for customers who are well-connected, highly mobile and have a global perspective.

“They want a new type of motor car that gives them unbounded access in ultimate luxury. Their sense of adventure and daring demands a ‘go-anywhere in ultimate luxury’ motor car that will both take them to and meet them at the pinnacle of life. Cullinan is that motor-car.”

It’s a bit boxy but it’s exactly what suits the roller badge in my opinion

New Rolls-Royce Cullinan confirmed for South Africa

Daytona, the local distributor for the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brand, has confirmed that the first examples of new Cullinan will arrive in South Africa later in 2018.

According to Daytona, four units have already been allocated to South Africa for 2018, all scheduled to arrive on local shores “towards the end of the year”. In addition, the Sandton-based firm says that it is already taking orders for 2019.

No word yet on local pricing, although when the Cullinan touches down, it’s expected to claim the title of South Africa’s most expensive SUV, eclipsing the Bentley Bentayga W12 (which is currently priced at R3 987 000).

Billed as an “all-terrain, high-bodied” vehicle, Rolls-Royce’s first SUV runs on the Goodwood-based brand’s latest aluminium architecture and is powered by a 6,75-litre twin-turbo V12 delivering 420 kW and 850 N.m to all four corners.

Named after the largest diamond ever discovered, Rolls-Royce describes the Cullinan as an “incredibly capable off-roader” that doesn’t sacrifice its on-road behaviour.

Four Units Of Rolls-Royce Cullinan Allocated To South Africa This Year

Daytona is responsible for the distribution of Rolls-Royce vehicles in South Africa so naturally they will be taking orders for the new ultra-luxurious Cullinan SUV.

Rolls-Royce South Africa confirmed the first examples will be arriving in SA later this year with four units allocation to our beautiful country for 2018.

They are also taking orders for 2019 (two already confirmed) if customers missed out on the first four.

No word yet on local pricing as of yet but it will most certainly claim the title of most expensive SUV for sale in South Africa when it is released. Pricing in the UK is around £230,000 and if we take into account the exchange rate and local taxes, this will sell for something around the R8.5 million mark.

Rolls-Royce boss rules out baby Cullinan despite success of first SUV

Torsten Müller-Ötvös has no intention to grow the Rolls-Royce range at the moment in order to maintain the brand's high market position

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös has said the firm’s model line-up is now complete following the launch of the Cullinan SUV.

The British firm’s first off-roader is its fifth model, alongside the Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and Dawn. But while other manufacturers are expanding their range of SUVs, Müller-Ötvös said there was no demand among the brand’s ‘ultra-luxury’ buyers.

Asked whether Rolls would consider swelling its line-up with an SUV smaller than the Cullinan, Müller-Ötvös told Autocar: “No, definitely not. You need to go with the flow, so for that reason, I’d never say never, never, never – but we don’t currently have any plans to expand our model line-up any further.

“Our strategy is definitely to maintain our high-end price position and not move the brand just for volume sake into lower-price segments.”

Müller-Ötvös said early sales of the Cullinan have exceeded expectations.

The British firm showed the ultra-luxury off-roader to customers ahead of its official launch recently and he called customer reaction “brilliant”.

The Cullinan is set to face opposition in the ultra-luxury SUV segment from Aston Martin’s revived Lagonda brand. It will relaunch in 2021 with an SUV previewed in a concept sketch. Asked about that model, Müller-Ötvös said: “It’s just a sketch. I can’t say anything more. Cullinan is real.”

And no one has commented so far on how hideous this thing looks? The proportions at the back, are totally off. The overall look is that of brick meets London taxi.

Maybe because some of us find it quite good looking. It’s menacing!. If I was a mafia boss, I’d definitely want to be driven in this thing, grey one.

Yuck, so disgusting. So uncouth!

Agreed, just look at the handling, View attachment 493406

Amen brother, let's all unite and reject whatever this is with the contempt it deserves. / spits

No, we don't, it's a hideous thing. A Rolls-Royce as an SUV..... a common man's car, a Roller should be a sedan, coupe or droptop(drophead in Roller speak) not something as common and unsightly as an SUV.

Preach brother! Show him the error of his ways
