Hi guys
I am having so much pain in my tooth when i heat or even when i breath in the air it also pain, i think i will need a root canal but i am scared of the pain and also the coat, do you have any idea about the cost of the root canal with and without the crown.
Thanks a lot

Its a 2/3 session procedure, was 1500 total in my case, but depends on the severity

You think it could be more than R1500 if the tooth in a very bad condition ??

One thing I can guarantee you, the pain will only get worse, so much so that you are going to wish you are dead.

Go talk to your dentist about a payment plan.

A crown is around R2500 at my dentist.
A root canal yes, goes for around R1500.

The root canal isn't sore, it's just uncomfortable - it's a bloody deep hole they make to remove the nerve.

I think medical aid rates are around R1400-R1500. Maybe, if you paying cash, it will be cheaper.

The root canal is not to bad, it's the crown that comes afterwards that can be about R3k

not sore! i had two root canals done. next time a tooth need attention its coming out!
a couple of painkiller injections. then they drill a hole through the rotten piece. no pain. they have to trace the nerve then remove the nerve, the rotting dead pieces. they stop when they hit live fresh nerve. think about that. they stop when they touch open working nerve ending. involutarily i booted the assistant walking past. they fill the nerve hole with pieces of wood/something. and you have to go back in two days for the same process until they dig all the nerve out! WOO YEAH!:wtf:

Thanks guys for your concern and your valued replies i really appreciate it, i'm by the dentist now, i decided to do it before it get worse :(

But i think i'm gona go for the root canal only as the crown will be so expensive

root canal is nowhere near as bad as a sore tooth, the pain is gone IMMEDIATELY

sheez R1500, that’s so cheap.
root canal can be a bloody nightmare as they stick these massive pins down the tooth’s canals to kill the nerves and one time the injections just didn’t work and I shot off the chair and punched the dentist in the face, it was just instinct, wasn't able to think.
anyhow they ended up gassing me and I didn't know if I was frikken Arthur or Martha and if he anal probed me as revenge :(
I then found a dentist who is gentle as a lamb, he numbs and re-numbs and you don't feel a thing but his prices, through the roof and back, his last quote for root canal only, no crown,R4800.00.
I went uh no, sorry dude, not sponsoring your vacation in Italy and found a sweetheart of a dentist, young cute thing, but she still charges R2400 which is more than the R1500 been thrown around here.

Root canals consist of three steps, simply:
1- access to and removing nerve and infected tissue,
2- cleaning and shaping canal structures,
3- filling the cleaned canals with inert material (gutta percha)

cost of root canals can vary, depending on if its a front tooth or a back tooth, front teeth only have 1 canal, premolars have two, and molars have 3/4 canals, so obviously molars are more expensive. Depending on the canal system, it can be completed in 1 appointment or I've known it to take 5 appointments. Root canals are generally painless, if antibiotics are taken before hand probably only 1 in 10 might experience pain or discomfort. There is often some discomfort after root canal has been done but this is more bruising from the procedure on the bone around the root being treated.

crowns should be done on all root treated teeth, the root canal makes teeth brittle and very susceptible to fracturing (tooth vitality is lost!). Crowns are needed to prevent this otherwise you bite into your meal and tooth breaks and its 3 times the cost to fix it, most opt to have it taken out, but then the rooth canal was for nothing.

For all work, get a quote but standard med aid rate is generally R1500 root canal front teeth, R2000 premolar and R3000 for molar and crowns depending on material go for between R3000 to R4000.

Hope that helps...

it rally helps thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, now i know what the story
i appreciate your concern and your helpful reply

I had root canal done on a tooth about six years ago and it was R8K. Think that included replacing a couple of fillings too though.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was R14K now.

Had a root canal done last month.
First session was about R800
Second and final session was R2500

That's without a crown. Was repaired with normal composite resin filling.
With a crown R12 - R14K is completely realistic.

Which is why I insist they do not put on a crown. It is unnecessary and any dentist who says otherwise is talking shat.
6 years ago I had a root canal done on a different tooth and half the tooth was removed. I insisted they build it up with composite resin. Dentist said he will do it, but it wont last a year.

Once again. that's 6 years ago and the tooth is still 100% fine.
Total cost was about R2400

Don't get pressured into getting a crown.

12k for my last one in Feb 2022, root canal + porcelain crown
back tooth, took 4 visits.
