Root canals consist of three steps, simply:
1- access to and removing nerve and infected tissue,
2- cleaning and shaping canal structures,
3- filling the cleaned canals with inert material (gutta percha)
cost of root canals can vary, depending on if its a front tooth or a back tooth, front teeth only have 1 canal, premolars have two, and molars have 3/4 canals, so obviously molars are more expensive. Depending on the canal system, it can be completed in 1 appointment or I've known it to take 5 appointments. Root canals are generally painless, if antibiotics are taken before hand probably only 1 in 10 might experience pain or discomfort. There is often some discomfort after root canal has been done but this is more bruising from the procedure on the bone around the root being treated.
crowns should be done on all root treated teeth, the root canal makes teeth brittle and very susceptible to fracturing (tooth vitality is lost!). Crowns are needed to prevent this otherwise you bite into your meal and tooth breaks and its 3 times the cost to fix it, most opt to have it taken out, but then the rooth canal was for nothing.
For all work, get a quote but standard med aid rate is generally R1500 root canal front teeth, R2000 premolar and R3000 for molar and crowns depending on material go for between R3000 to R4000.
Hope that helps...
