So about 2 or so years ago the side of one of my crowns broke off. This wasn't a problem but over the last year a hole has formed from the broken side inwards so now the structure of my tooth resembles a gorge. The pain has been unbearable at sometimes with me going through 4 Myprodol (S3) on a bad day or one Tramacet (S5) on a very bad day. I can't eat with that side of my mouth and the daily mouthwash experience has been a lesson in determining how much I can grip the granite counter without cracking it.

Well I have had enough. I used my phone the other day to take a photo of my mouth and I was not pleased with what I saw. My tooth is obviously infected and from what I have read the pain is likely due to the pulp being infected too. This means its root canal time. Apparently this procedure is not as painful as it used to be but having done 3 years of Orthodontics including the removal of 5 adult teeth and the painful forcing of one of my incissors into place through tension, I am used to pain.

Has anyone here had the procedure? Can you recommend a dentist in Pretoria?

I had root canal done and could not have anaesthetic as it has adrenaline in it.
Not to scare you but that was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my entire life and I have had a lumbar puncture , deviated septum, convulsions ......

So you gave birth to Chuck Norris it seems. Damn man, that is some hardcore pain. Drilling out the nerve... You should have gotten drunk before hand.

They gave me the Anaesthetic and I did not know it had Adrenaline in it, I cant handle that, my heart went 200 BPM had to tush to hospital to get beta blockers.

After that he said sorry bud, I cant give you Anaesthetic without the Adrenaline so can you handle the pain? There was a hot chick in the room assisting so I said of course I can.
Wrong move on my behalf.
Never in all my life have I had such pain.

Men have done dumber things in the name of impressing a sexy woman.

Same as marine1. Cant have adrenaline either. Wasn't a root canal but a close second. The pain can be best described as a 'white out' it consumes everything. Just mind numbing pain that goes to your core.

Had a root canal a few weeks ago. No biggie. Had a molar removed more recently and that hurt...

It'll be fine. The injections are pretty powerful. It is a bit of an unnerving procedure though, esp the top teeth.

I know exactly what you mean. Went to dentist, got adrenaline based injections and then went gyming. That was fck'in scary & thought I was dying.

hehe.

You know you can just munch some normal painkiller then? You'll likely need a script to get something sufficiently powerful enough. NB if you're certain which tooth it is & discuss with dentist first.

Had to get a root canal done about 3 years ago when a porcelain filling cracked. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but it definitely didn't hurt or anything. Still had periodic flare ups under the tooth that required anti-biotics, but haven't had any recent issues with it. The dentist I had was pretty good, but unfortunately he has decided to emigrate to the Netherlands. By your description I would think it lucky if they could still save your tooth.

Just make sure to tell them if the anesthetic doesn't take. Had mine done and no matter what they injected it still hurt like hell (everything in my mouth, except the tooth, was numb until I slept that night).

You can see specialists who are qualified to use more extreme anesthetics, although make sure you ask them about the materials they use, turned out mine had charged for all types of fancy temporary fillings but only used the standard kit.

Had a root canal when I was in Grade 10 (took a hockey ball to the mouth 2 years before), dentist gave me injections all around my mouth, felt a little pinch now and again and that was it, really wasn't that bad

If you have a crown then they should have done a root canal on that tooth already. You'll find air has got into the area and it's infected.
The worst injection is the one your pallet.
You might need to go twice one to open and clean area with temp cover and then after a few days of antibiotics and infection clear to complete.

Good luck.

Oh dear God don't remind me of that you.........................................ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Go see a dentist. Soon.

You will probably find that the first dentist left a reEaAlly tIny piece of nerve and that is causing a chronic infection.
(talking from experience)
The way it was explained to me:
there will be a continuous infection, until the infecting matter is cleared. And the deciding factor is when he explained that with time and enough infections the jaw bone will recede  .
I confirmed with 2 other dentists before rushing to go have that done(another root canal, but this time no painkillers- tooth is dead already. Just very awful when it vibrates through the ajoining teeth, pain at times). I like having a jaw with teeth in.
