Roundabout

Is that not exactly what happens there? You have to wait until a car, like the Polo, blocks the red path and take your change... or until some red car gives you a gap. That is what is happening at most of the traffic circles in Cape Town's Northern 'burbs.

No, red car will go, I wait till he clears and I can go, next red car waits for me to go and drive while I am taking the turn, next yellow car waits for him to clear and then goes and so forth.

Maybe its a Gauteng thing. We even make our own invisible stop streets. Anyone who travelled the R55 between N14 and Olievenhoutsbosch in peak times will know about the invisible stop street that was active at peak times (there's now a robot).

Pictures incoming, cause what you say still does not sound right, I still say, its exactly a 3 way stop if congested:

Have to pretend its very congested like it is in the mornings. So I am yellow. While I am still waiting for red (who was at his yield line first) to clear the intersection, the next car is already at reds yield line. I am still waiting at my yield line for red to clear the circle area. In the direction which me and red are traveling there is backup from the next intersection into this intersection. If I do what it sounds like you propose, I'd be waiting forever for no cars to be at reds yield.

The view from reds side.

I was trying to get my head around the difference between a traffic circle and roundabout and I couldn't figure it out what everyone's talking about.
In seeing these pictures posted, I realised that I've never experienced nor seen a traffic circle before! :o

Pleasure! Yes, it's a iddy biddy little thing, isn't it? With many the yield lines are even closer to the actual circle.

Is it wrong to stick to the outside lane even if you're not taking the first exit?

I ask because I almost collided with a vehicle on Saturday in the outside lane when they cut in front of me when they were entering the circle. I take it that the other driver assumed that I was taking the previous exit due to me being in the outside lane. But I always stay in the outside lane no matter what exit I'm taking. I've learned that there's just a much greater chance of being cut off or taken over in the circle if you take the inside lane and then try to exit.

The way i understand it:

In a two lane circle, outside lane is only for exit 1 or 2(turning left or going straight over the circle)
Inside lane is for exit 3 and 4(turning right or going back the way you came)

So if you can use the outside lane for one or two exits, why not for three?

Treat it as a double lane road, use your indicators and check for douchebags. It's not that difficult.

It's not that difficult but you do it wrong...

To facilitate others entering the circle. If everyone always stays in the outside lane it becomes more difficult for others to get in. More so when you've been around more than 50% of the circle in the outside lane.

Good points...but I'm going to stay part part of the "problem". It's a free for all survival of the bravest thing here in Jo'burg anyway. Don't be a dick...that's how I approach it.

By "staying part of the problem" you are acting like one of the dicks that make this unneccesarily complicated.

Since you aren't following the "law" when it comes to using a two lane circle, you kind of are being a dick...

Yeah...oh well. Just don't ever speed or hog the fast lane or anything.

And there ladies and gentlemen is a prime example of why we have an issue on our roads in South Africa with people not obeying the law. "If everyone else does it, then why can't I."
