Router\ADSL modem that Runs Cool...

So i was thinking of getting me a Netgear, but people saying it heats up! :cry:

So--- what would be a good router\modem to get that will stay on for as long as posible and NOT GET HOT(Excessively HOT)?

Thanks in Advance. My line is being converted to a rented line today(Was prepaid) - hopefully in the next week i get the ADSLSorted.

I have opted for the SAOL option (R700 uncapped 384kb)
Any bad reviews about SAOL? Anything Good? :D
 
Just about all electronic devices produce heat. I wouldn't use this as a criterion for purchase. Netgear is a respected brand. Walk around and do a touchy-feely on your pc's, dstv decoders, routers, modems, etc. You'll find they all produce a fair degree of heat...
 
With that said, some produce more heat than others. Im kinda looking for something that will last and not heat up and leave me without an internet connection whilst it cools down :-D Billion, i have read about those routers... will check it out, thanks ;)
 
My Netgear DG834v2 is mounted vertically using the supplied brackets, runs cool and has been up 24/7 since Jan 2007 except for power outages.

I should also add that Telkom has performed faultlessly for the same period, mind you I'm in PE which seems to be one of their better service areas.
 
I have a d-link 2500u and SMC Barricade N - both are cold to the touch...have to check the lights to see that the thing is even on.

Sure all things produce heat but some less than others.

We run cisco routers at work and also cool to the touch and no mounting whatsoever needed on all above routers - run a google search on netgear and heat and see for yourself - sturdy product, decent firmware but neat issues even on their latest product.

Question?
Doesn't a product that produces lot's of heat also use more electricity?

Linksys might be owned by Cisco but you cannot compare the two product ranges, difference is night and day.
 
I would like to add that enabling wlan will make your router hotter then normal.I asked 3 salesmen for the cheapest and best wireless router for 24/7 usage and now proudly own a dlink for R670.
 
Only has 1 Ethernet port - D-Link 2500u, but the SMC has 4 and Wireless-N, D-link (modem) is connected to the SMC (broadband router)which broadcasts to our laptops.
D-link 2500u doesn't have wireless capabilities. R250
 
All of the netgear routers that we put in @ client's networks still run very well, some even been running for about 4/5 year now. Even though they get warm, it's not that bad
 
So the 2500u has 2 ports, one for the ADSL and 1 for 1 PC\laptop :-(
Hemps what do you think of the DSL-2640U WIRELESS G ?

@Dmon Angel - how is SAOL? Reliable? Which one you got 348kb?
 
I may not use the wireless capabilities though, and if i do, my laptop will be right next to the router (max 1meter away) :-D
 
The D-Link 2500U has only 1 Ethernet port, and no WiFi. It's a very nice ADSL router for R250-R300. WiFi would definitely be the main cause of the heat in most routers, especially if its being used continuously.

They just called me right now and my line is active. purchased 1gig to test saol.I will let you know buddy.
 
I first started using D-link products in the UK, and then back in SA we have d-link access points throughout our offices in East London, King and Queenstown and they are still running even with the dodgy power cuts that destroyed all Gigabyte stuff.
So naturally I'm a fan as are people with Netgear products...a Google search on the DSL-2640U doesn't produce many reviews?
