So i was messing around with my router(Dlink DSL2500) and came across ADSL Statistics.
Attainable rate is 3928kbs - is my line already a 4Mb line?:D Or is someone going to burst my buble? LOL

Attainable Rate (Kbps): Downstream : 3928 Upstream : 532
Rate (Kbps): Downstream : 1024 Upstream : 511

It just shows that you can get that speed, based on your SNR and Attenuation figures. It doesn't mean that you've got it. On my router it displays my attainable rate as 8000kbs, but I know it's not yet activated.

i think you must be quite a distance from the exchange or you have a fault on the line, but more the distance issue. I think you will only attain 2Mbps max. Anything higher will result in constant dc's.

From what I gather, you already have a 1mbps upto 4mbps (i.e. 1024kbps upto 4096kbps) ADSL line from Telkom, and you are probably already being charged R413 per month for it.

However, your line is only syncing at 1mbps (i.e. 1024 kbps), but the modem is reporting that it can sync at up to 3928kbps. Now 3928kbps is just short of 4096kbps - the full speed of a 4mbps line. So you won't be able to get full 4mbps connectivity. The highest you can get is 3072kbps (i.e. 3mbps) because Telkom's speed profiles go up in increments of 1024kbps. Now if the speed profiles were more finely grained, say in increments of 256kbps instead of 1024kbps), you would be able to sync at 3840kbps (3mbps + 0.75mbps = 3072kbps + 768kbps = 3072kbps + (256kbps x 3)).

Well at least that's the way I understand it.

I bought 2Gb from Afrihost now...when im home, i will try downloading sumtin...

Imagine if i get 300kb :-D..... damn i'l be LUCKY!!! :-D

If your modem is syncing at 1024kbps (i.e. 1mbps) you will only be able to download at a maximum speed of about 125KB/s (kilobytes per second, 1024/8), but realistically you maximum will be closer to 100-110KB/s accounting for IP and other overhead.

Can you confirm how much you are paying Telkom per month? Do you know if you have a 4mbps line (i.e. 1mbps up to 4mbps)?

Paying SAOL 384k inclu line rental - R699 pm

But according to my router stats - line could be capable of more than 384k speeds. So im going to test with the Afrihost account tonight.

My attainable rate is 24MB.......lets hope those upgrades come soon enough

P.S It must really suck if your paying R413 and your line only syncs at 2MB or lower

Tjoker...it is true..

BUT its GOTTA rock if you paying R699 for 384k LINE and uncapped 384 account and the line is capable of 1Mb download or possibly 4Mb download speeds!

How envious the guys paying for 4Mb line will be--- Muhahahahaha (evil laugh)

Will let you guys know tonight what speeds im getting!

So i loged on using my Afrihost details... and WHAT UTTER CRAP (In my Opinion)

The download speed was slower, the surfing was slower. But specs on the ADSL router were better :???

So im back on SAOL and its much faster..and unCAPPED!

By 'line rental' do you mean the R131 for the analogue line or do u mean the ADSL access charge?

If i were to guess then u r paying for a 4mbps line (R413 p/m) but your uncapped SAOL 384k account is throttled to 384k speeds which is a max of 39KB/s. If so, it's a total waste of a 4mbit line...

No.

He is paying for the 384kb/s ADSL line access portion and his uncapped/unshaped bandwidth which totals R699. It excludes the 'phone line' portion, NO isp out there bills you for the phone line portion.

No, he is not paying for a 4Mb/s line with throttles 384kb/s bandwidth. He is paying for a 384kb/s line + uncapped&unshaped bandwidth.

@ponder, i'm not familiar with the SAOL packages. Are you, and that's how u know that it's unshaped for R699? What is their website URL?

Cause, at R699 one could be forgiven for assuming that it's for the 4mbps access charge plus 384k uncapped account.
