Has anybody used a Huawei HG520c ADSL2+ Modem, 4 port Wireless router? It seems quite cheap...

What I want to know is, is it dodgy? Should I rather pay double and get a Netgear or something? I currently have a d-link but it got hit by lightning a week after I got it and I've been using it as a wireless AP ever since. I connected a ethernet router to it to provide ADSL connectivity, but this isn't ideal. I would much rather go back to using one router again.

Some advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Huawei is like the second biggest network hardware solution provider in the world just after Cisco. Their hardware is widely used in Vodacom's 3G network, including USB modems and stations.

I'm aware that there are similarly priced routers available, but which ones are better?

I have two of their data cards. Besides for the crap software that vodacom tries to make you use, I havent had one single day worth of issues with them. Not one! The one is used 24/7 in an access point at my brother's house. I cannot understand why this router is this cheap though? There must be a catch?

I will always recommend D-link. D-link DSL-2640U. Local support, local ADSL settings predefined and in drop-down menus when setting up the router, etc.

That's what I have now. I can't say anything bad about it. I was just stupid enough to believe that a lightning protector would actually work and that the insured value stated on the package would actually be paid out in the event of damage to equiptment. Silly me.

I used to have a D-link, now using a netgear. I'd definitely recommend Netgear.

The reason Huawei is so popular is that they are a cheap chineese make.

Why don't you buy one seeing it's so cheap and let us know what it's like?

just a note:

if you buy your router from telkom & it gets hit in the first 12 months after you get it, they replace it.

I know there are issues with telkom with regards to service etc... just remember lightening is not covered under normal warrantees.

I'd def go for Netgear been using them for years and years and i've never been let down before there UI's are also very easy to use, understand and config

D-link is cheap and nasty. I would recommend a Linksys, netgear or Billion router.

Because I would rather not buy it if it's crap.

When the lightning strikes it does not give schit about the brand of your router. I've had a cheapo single Lan port Microcom router for 5yrs now that does not miss a beat, even during lightning :D

My uber expensive netgear used to lose sync the whole time and kukked itself when there was a rumble in mumbai, did not last more than 6 months.

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to try the Huawei and I'm not sorry (yet). Setup was fairly easy, but it wasn't nearly as easy as on the DLink. I'm still quite happy with my purchase though.

Cool. Your D-Link is probably an older model that used a different set up. The newer models are helluva easy.

Enjoy.

Lightning protectors don't work, try tying knots in the cables.

And re the OP: get a Netgear or Linksys router. Cheap is Cheap cos it's, well, cheap.
nm, I see you bought the thing already.

As far as my experience goes, buy absolutely *ANYTHING* but the crap Telkom were supplying up until a couple of years ago. The Marconis were absolutely horrible, the Billions only marginally better. I hear they are (or have been) selling Netgear, well that is one hell of an improvement.

Netgear very rearely requires rebooting, most D-Links (and, for that matter, many other brands) have to be rebooted for every trivial config change you make. Can be a "little" frustrating.
