Router has no phone jack

Hi,

So I went out and got myself the linksys WRT54GL wireless router thinking great, it has wireless plus 4 ethernet ports and a port to plug in your cable to get online. I was wrong :(

The internet port on the router is an ethernet port, so there is no where to plug in a phone jack.

So how do I get around this now? Do I have to go out and buy something else aswell? I thought that maybe the POTS filters you get from telkom to split the data and phone line might be able to take the phone line in one side, and ethernet in the other, but that's not the case with the old one i've got here. Are there newer ones that can do that? Or is there some sort of cheap device I can buy so I can somehow get my linksys router plugged into the phone line.

What you have is a broadband router. What you're looking for is an ADSL modem router combo. Sometimes this isn't made very clear by the seller.

Try to take it back to wherever you bought it for an exchange.

Failing that, you can buy a wired DSL modem for around R300.

EDIT: Thanks for the reply. I've still got my billion BIPAC 5102 which till now i've been using to get online. It's a normal 4 port ethernet router plus a phone jack point. Could I simply plug my linksys into that? Would there be any compatibility issues?

Also, would there be any funny setup issues since I would then have the adsl phone line plugging into a router which in turn plugs into another router.

Yes.

The WRT54GL is just a broadband router. If you had an ADSL modem (standalone), you could plug that into it directly. It should also be able to work with something like an iBurst modem (ethernet type).
 
OK cool thanks. Ill give it a try later today by plugging the phone line / adsl into the billion router, then out of that plug the linksys.

Hopefully that will work.
 
The phoneline goes into the billion, and then you place a network cable from the billion to the WAN port on the linksys.

You then log in to the linksys web interface (http://192.168.1.1, I think), and under "Setup" select PPPOE, and enter your ADSL login details.

It will then connect to the internet through your billion modem.
 
stand to be corrected but the billion also needs to be in bridge mode or something i think?
 
The Billion will need to be in bridged mode. Then use the linksys to connect(pppoe interface). All of your pc's will be plugged in to the linksys and it will be your gateway. I think that you will have to disable things like DNS on the Billion.


EDIT: Plug the Billion in to the "internet" port on the Linksys.
 
got yourself a blessing in disguise. the linksys wrt54g/gl is a great router. stick custom firmware on there and you can do all sorts of stuff with it (it runs linux) like dialing up multiple accounts to split international/local for you.. check the thread in the main page. if you one day switch from DSL to wireless or whatever the case, your wrt54g will still be the router that does all the work for you
