Hi.

I currently have a Asus DSL-AC68U downstairs, and have a cat5e cable running upstairs. Just need to decide what device to connect it to for wifi and wired devices.

I'm thinking the ASUS RT-AC87U, for its great wifi range and 802.11ac support. Can anyone suggest a better device ( needs good wifi range and ac support ) ? Should I be considering a switch ? Do u get switches that provide wifi ? Some other class of device entirely ?

Thanks in advance.

What do you need to connect to it? Wired or wireless devices? Or both?

If you sacrifice the WAN port, and disable the dhcp server, any WAN router should work. Alternatively, get something that sports OpenWRT and you can use the WAN port as well by redefining the switches vlan configuration.

Thanks for the response.

Need both wired and wireless. Was just wondering if a router was overkill.

Well, the router will have both wired and wireless interfaces. If you can find a Wireless Access Point with both wired (multiple, for incoming and other devices) and wireless, that is cheaper than the router, then go for it.

Many people already have a spare router lying around, and can use that if necessary.
