Im just wanting to know if i should switch of my router in the evenings before i go to bed or just leave it on instead. It just kinda worries me that i switch it off everyday before i got to bed.

It doesn't make a difference either way. The main reason if and when I shutdown my pc or router, is when there is a storm outside, or when it starts, lightning has caused me lots of frustration where I live.

It doesn't really use your bandwidth if you're router is on, but if you prefer to switch it off, because it's some form of OCD then feel free to do it ;)

Leave it on. Telkom has a habit of screwing up their login processes where, if you do not log in you will remain connected, but, if you do try to login you will fail. If the machines connected to the router are off, it will do you no harm.

You HAVE changed the router's password haven't you?

Thats the first thing i done when i got it installed so its all good.i was just worried the switching it on and off everyday would cause a problem later.so if you say its fine to leave it on then hey why not.if i switching it off dont cause problems and i feel safer then why not.

Security wize, a device connected to the net is only truly safe when it's turned off. Not to mention curbing electricity consumption by turning off devices when you sleep. Turning it on and off is not a problem mate, the problem is leaving it on with remote administration enabled. Basic auth is used for these router logins, way to easy to launch attacks against, if it is enabled(generally a bad idea), especially when the default router username is admin for every single router in the 41.240/16 range... makes things too easy.
Hahaha, that should do it.

it depends what type of adsl account you have. If it is a topup type account where you manually need to buy extra gigs, then really, the worst that could happen on the highly unlikely chance you were hacked, is you would lose those gigs you bought. So in this case the extra hassle of connecting every morning wouldn't be worth.

If though, it was one of those no limit (pay per meg) accounts, then i can certainly see the logic in being hyper careful.

Normally though, if your router and adsl accounts have quality passwords, and your wireless is wpa2 encrypted, you might as well just chance it. There really is very little risk.

I'm not an electrician but wouldnt it be better to also completely unplug the stuff after shutting it down?

I leave mine on 24/7. Usually too lazy even to unplug it during a storm :D

why change rutr admin psw?
if remote admin is off, no one can login from outside anyways right?
and if they can, what can they do on the thing that is so bad?
ok f/up my settings and than what?
i cant connect to cybersmart from anywhere but my tel. no. anyways ( according to them )
