So before spending a bunch more time with tech support, I thought I would post here. It might be a reference for someone else going forward.

Telkom FTTH line has been installed. I received a Zyxel VMG1312 router from VOX for set up. Briefly spoke to a VOX guy from tech support but ran out of time and had to duck back to work.

What settings would you guys use for setting up a router to dial a PPPOE connection on fibre? I would like to use my current Afrihost account if possible... but there are other settings besides user name and password. Which ones are important, and what would I set them to?

The line is a naked FTTH line at the moment (i.e. line only from VOX). I'm hoping to use my Afrihost account if possible. Will get a VOX account if that doesn't go according to plan.

Not really any settings other than PPPOE. Just connect and you should be hundreds. Should die any account that would work on Telkom lines.
Just make sure to plug your router into port 1 on the fibre ONT, others are locked down.

So after an evening with VOX tech support and no joy with a test account of theirs... I plugged in my Afrihost details and it all just worked... no setting changes, just a straight Ethernet PPPOE dial out.

Hot diggity this fibre is awesome! Our 40Mb VDSL doesn't stream video even close to as well as the 20Mb fibre line does... and on the VDSL connection we get 37Mbps on speed test.

I suppose there is approximately 0 congestion at the exchange on fibre (at least mine as I am the first connection on the hub).

After seeing this performance, I can't understand why anyone in a fibre area wouldn't drop ADSL / VDSL in a heart beat.
