I have recently taken up gconnect's 9BG 30 day pass for R200 - http://www.gconnect.co.za/ and now need to enter my account details into a landing page in order to access the web.

I have 2 iphones, 2 laptops and a ps 3 runing on my home network - how do these other devices (iphones, ps3) connect when they don't when not using a browser - app store, email, itunes, ps store etc.

i.e - say I want to update ps3 firmware. There is no provision made for going to a landing page etc. Surely I am not going to boot up my laptop and login to gconnect (and keep this on so that the connection does not drop) in order to play online games, download a game form the playstation store etc.

My home network has no server at all - all clients.
Is there a way thay my router {DSL-G604T } can perform this "landing page login function" automatically? If not this setup is going to be a real pain.

Many thanks,
Sam

I don't know gconnect at all, but I would assume that they authenticate a single IP address. This implies that if all your PC's are sharing the same WAN IP address, that authenticating with a single PC on the LAN would allow all the others to connect too.

I'm assuming that you have an USB 3G/HSDPA dongle that you connect to your laptop? If that's the case, you could simply setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the laptop and then it will give the other PC's access to the Internet.

Here's a thread where I've quickly tried to explain how to setup ICS with traffic splitting:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=210937

Since you won't be doing traffic splitting, your setup would be way less complicated :)

Simply disable DHCP on your ADSL router, so that it would only act as a switch.
Then go to the properties of the 3G connection on your PC -> Advanced Tab and then share that connection. By sharing the 3G/HSDPA connection, it would set your LAN IP address of that laptop to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.137.1 (depending on the Operating System). It would also run a DHCP server, meaning that if you connect other network devices to the switch (or ADSL router with DHCP server switched off), your laptop would automatically give the other devices IP addresses.
Running the ADSL router's wireless in bridging mode would allow your cellphones to connect via your laptop's 3G too.

So simply connecting other devices to the switch, they would be able to connect through your laptop.

Thanks for the response Pada.

Perhaps I was a little unclear - I am using ADSL to connect to gconnect (they do 3g and hotspot wifi too though).

I have my router set to router mode (ie not bridge mode) and need to login to their landing page with my laptop to allow other devices to connect. This sounds ok but is a real drag and could be a showstopper if I cant figure out how to hold the connection without devoting a machine to it.

Right now - I cant check my mail on my iphone, unless I have logged in using my laptop to the landing page.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Sorry, I can't help you out on this one since I don't know exactly how gconnect works :(

Can't you just access the landing page on your cellphone? Or are they hosting the site using HTTPS (SSL)... and then your cellphone doesn't have the root (CA) certificate for it, meaning that it would simply reject the connection to the landing page?
