Hi all, basically my brother is staying with me at the moment, I just got my adsl line finally (7 months waiting on Telkom...) and I need a router that can limit bandwidth to a particular IP or MAC address. It's clear I can't trust him to use netlimiter. He needs to be connected for uni work so I can't cut him off, but I would at least like to limit him to half the line speed so I can use it during the day. I need a new router anyway, this one is ancient (only supports ADSL 1, QoS can only be set for all connections, can only block MAC address instead of limit).

Most of the TP-Links can do it.

If you have a 2nd pc, try Pfsense.
It can do exactly what you described and much more.
You don't even need a screen, keyboard or mouse for it once it is set up.
The pc does not have to be strong either.

Why are you allowing someone you don't trust to use the internet connection in your name?

If something goes wrong they won't be breaking down his door...

Two of the three Billion routers I have used have that option - works beautifully.

You can limit specific IP addresses to a % of the ADSL sync line speed.
The 8800NXL and the 7300W both have that feature.

@PsyClown Unfortunately mine doesn't have the % feature, and can only limit upload rates in 32kb/s intervals (can't do downloads).
@Havok The things we do for family right? :/
@RoMark No spare PC, I'll have a look at some of the TP-Links

So unless someone is familiar with the billion 800VGT (which according to the internet was owned by maybe 3 other people) and knows how to get the QoS feature to actually work, I'm going to need a new router :P

Get a different Billion then - Perhaps one of the two I mentioned.

Otherwise a TP link if they have such a feature too :)

Sooo where the hell can I buy routers these days? O_O
Telkom and Mweb are only listing 4 routers altogether, and Incredible corruption has hardly anything worth-while under R900.
Even Takealot has nothing besides two Huawei routers (which I don't trust as a brand after having 4 faulty 3g modems)

As a MyBB member you qualify for discount as well.

PC shops will also stock routers.

You can buy from Esquire as well. You need to open an account, if you don't have one. PM Esquire here on the forum to help you.

Dont get a Netgear. After they discontinued the DG834G (which is probably the best router ever made) netgear started to make junk.
