Afternoon

I have been looking to upgrade my D-Link 2750U router and was looking at these two
TP-LINK Archer D7 AC1750 - wireless router - DSL modem - 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
or
Linksys EA6900 - wireless router - 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

any thoughts

What is a good reliable DSL router these days? I don't need the wifi as I have routers on my network that provide me with awesome access. I have a SMC router but its been a good 2-3 years since I changed it, starting to wonder if it isn't the cause for some problems I have been experiencing of late. Budget router would be 500-1000 anyone have any suggestions?

I personally prefer to have separate devices as the modem and router.
Combo's are sometimes expensive - especially VDSL combo's - and are prone to issues.
If you like to tinker you'll find it's easier to get custom firmware for routers than modem routers.
You might find it cheaper to pickup an inexpensive ADSL modem and a nice router.
Hadn't heard great things about TP-Link when I was in the market for a router.

If you're looking to improve your WiFi Wireless N connectivity then don't hold your breath.
I got myself an Asus RT68U hoping my Wireless N connectivity would be better than the Billion 8800NXL and two Zyxel VDSL modem/routers I tried. It was no better or worse. The moral of the story is that unless you're seeking Wireless AC, Wireless N performance on the better devices are be pretty much the same. They generally use the same wireless chipsets - Broadcom or Atheros.

I've retained the 8800NXL as a VDSL modem. It works well. No issues there.
It's also a back-up AP for when the overly expensive Asus throws a wobbly - and trust me it does.
The Asus RT68U is my AP. It was an overly expensive paperweight for a time. Firmware kept causing the WiFi to freeze. Asus were pathetic in terms of assisting on this. The latest firmware resolved the issue, however was months of frustration.

I have an Archer D7, best tech item I've ever bought.

Completely stable, haven't touched it in 6 months. And the ac wifi makes a big difference. Also has the juice to keep 2 phones connected, a tablet, a laptop and a TV box streaming a 30gig movie via LAN from a PC all at the same time.

I agree with this. Although my Net gear router can also act as the wireless router, I have it behind an ASUS router that's acting as the wireless router purely. This setup is very secure as you don't expose your modem to any threats that comes through the WiFi network as the ASUS's firewall can deal with those threats. Having a third party firmware like Rmerlin is also recommended as it offers you more control over the network.

Hey guys, so I've just bought the Archer D7, but I find that its coverage is worse off than the D-Link 2750U. Is this right? My understanding is that it should have a better range than the D-Link, not worse. The 5Ghz has about a 10 meter coverage and the 2.4Ghz channel about 16 meters (and then it is at -80dB). Could my D7 be faulty, and if so, how do I test if it is?

Set the antennas with the middle one pointed straight up, left at a 60degree angle to the left and right at a 60degree angle to the right. Maximises the spread.

5gHz and AC have shorter ranges than 2.4
