Router vs Usb

Well as to why the DNS doesn't resolve properly when you use a router. It does.

It must be a problem on your network or something.. A lot of people use iBurst with a router. Unless you mean that it doesnt change the DNS to OpenDNS properly?

I ma using OpenDNS through my router and it is fine.
 
When I set my router to the opendns settings it reverts back to the iburst dns, so I set all the PCs' on my network to the opendns settings and when I test it on http://welcome.opendns.com/ it says it's working properly with opendns.
 
Let's all just keep in mind that OpenDNS doesn't work properly in JHB because of a cursed proxy that iBurst uses there.

Hmm, maby you are right about this. I have never tested and I think all my computers have also been changed to OpenDNS.. I should try it out with just he router.
 
When I only changed the DNS in the router it reset itself back to iburst DNS and one of the opendns IP's giving me 3 in total that showed up in the router setup, and when testing it like that on the opendns site it said "OOPs" which meant it was not working.
After adding the opendns to each PC it then passed the test even with the iburst dns settings in the router.
 
Another quick question about dns settings from my side here. It seems that my LAN DNS is set to Verizon, but the PPPoE connection is still on the JHB and CPT Iburst DNS. Which is it then? :confused:
 
iBurst gave me some dns setting : 196.30.31.193 and 196.46.70.2

I don't have any luck with them but maybe they can help someone else.

I tried a different router today, same problem. Web pages won't load or they load slowly. iBurst says it's nothing on their side since it works fine on usb. *sigh*

Don't know what else to try except a hammer to the router.

Going by my findings the DNS setting on your PC overides the DNS setting on the router, try adding opendns settings to your PC and then go to the opendns test page, if you get the "OOPs" then it's not working, but with mine set as above it says all is ok.

Mayube Jhbgirl should also try the above.
 
You are correct...

Any settings on your LAN NIC will override those on the router, always best to set it only on your PC as not to affect other users utilising your network.

For example if you are using OpenDNS and you make a typo in the address bar it will take you to OpenDNS' search / advertising page (to keep it free – they say) and not the default of the user if they are using Google or the like.

It can confuse the hell out of a techno peasant...

Ok I added the opendns settings to the LAN NIC. Under command prompt ipconfig /all it shows is using those dns addresses.

Doesn't work according to the opendns site though :/
 
Yeah and it won't. I emailed OpenDNS about it and they told me that I'm running through a proxy, which all iBurst users here in the North side of SA do.
 
Jhbgirl, try the Verizon DNS settings since it seems the iburst proxy in jhb is causing problems with opendns.

I'm not sure what the Verizon IPs are but someone here might help out with them or you can do a search.
 
Yeah I'm using the Verizon settings now. Still hectically slow. Not sure it makes any difference. My whole setup was working w/o dns settings though. Just stopped working.

Joburg iBurst is running through a proxy and it causes intermitted connectivity issues with the Open DNS service.

You could use Joburg iBurst DNS 196.30.31.193 (S) as a secondary if you want.

Keep in mind that a DNS server is responsible for translating the alphabetic characters, into an IP address (in short) – so you will only notice a difference when requesting a page (once the title appears on the top of the browser window, the DNS request has been terminated), the loading of the actual page is signal / bandwidth dependent, i.e. Tower, iBurst, Verison, etc...

I suggest you use EyeBurst or the like to test your signal and or reposition your antenna.
EDIT: Sorry, missed that post "Well, as I said, it works fine on usb." - Mr H has a point there...

Could be MTU or if others on your network is downloading your speed will decrease. Try establishing best MTU for your tower, by connecting directly to the UTD and entering this command: ping -f -l 1372 196.30.31.193 increase the value of 1372 until it delivers an error message, then set your MTU with the last value that didn't deliver an error message.
Ctrl C to terminate
Recommended MTU = 1352 & VPN MTU = 1324

Well, as I said, it works fine on usb. Excellent speeds. Doubt it's my signal.
 
Jhbgirl, have you tried connecting directly to the modem with the ethernet connection without the router, and if so does it work fast or is it also slow?

I can't see the router been the problem and it's probably something to do with your network setup.
 
Ya, I've been trying to understand what all this openDNS stuff yada yada is about? My D-Link router get its DNS servers from the iBurst PPP negotiation (currently 196.30.31.193 & 196.46.70.1) and all PCs point to router's IP as DNS server (i.e. router acts as DNS forwarder).

Been running like that for a year without a days problem. In Kyalami JHB BTW.
 
Roman4604, many of us have found opendns to be faster and I used to get webpages timing out with iburst dns settings on the 1st click, now with opendns all those problems have disapeared.
