I'm think of getting a RouterBoard, wanting to learn some 'new'. I have a client that has a routerboard, thats used as a vpn server, it was installed by the previous IT company. I have to troubleshoot when they have problems with it so it will be good to learn.

I was first thinking of getting the RB430 but the price is much higher so I'm thinking on getting the RB750. I had another model last year but didn't have the time to play around and learn how it works so I sold it.

Anyways how easy is it to setup a vpn, multiple pppoe connections, ddns etc and can the RB750 do all that. I have found a thread here on traffic splitting, which I'll try once I get the RB.

I bought the Routers. I'm trying to set it up, so far got it to dial out a pppoe connection, got ddns working using a script and setup a pptp server.

The Problem I'm having is that I can connect to the vpn from within my network but the server (router) is not assigning an ip address, I created an IP pool and assigned it to the DHCP server but still getting an error.

Any idea when I can find a guide to help me get this setup correctly.

Update: I got the VPN working internally from my LAN, by using a script

I can ping my ddns host name from another location, but still can't connect via VPN. I can also access the router from the other location.

Make sure your firewall is not blocking the PPTP packets (port 1723)

I can now connect to the vpn from remote locations, but cant ping any pc's or routers from the other site.

vpn server is using 192.168.0.x, remote location is using 192.168.1.x.

I see the vpn client (remote site) is getting a 10.64.64.x ip address even though I created an ip pool in the 192.168.0.x range

Do I need to create a static so I can access the pc's, if so how do I do it.

Setting a static IP address and then setting up the routing table would work too, but I would suggest that you rather fix the issue on the PPTP server side.

Ensure that all the IP addresses in the PPTP server configuration script is in the 192.168.1.x range. I guess you have to specify the local-address and remote-address for the user to have the PPTP tunnel working, see some of the solutions mentioned in this thread: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21301&p=104901

Thanks, I got it working on the remote site using windows vpn client, now I want to try and get it working by installing another rb750 on the remote site.

Anyone with a working VPN setup on the RB750 willing to share the config file (backup file) so I can can import the file and change the required settings (dyndns, passwords etc)

I just need a copy of the config/backup file with generic settings...

mh348: it would be much simpler to just follow the tutorials/guides on the MikroTik Wiki.

I have a PPTP VPN server running on my RB750.

You need to setup the following:
1) PPTP Secret, which contains the username, password, pptp service and profile. You can fix a user's remote address in his profile.
2) PPTP Profile, with a local address (which can be pretty much any address) and remote address (here I'm specifying a dhcp pool)

Just note that Windows XP doesn't like some of the encryption/compression options, but Windows 7 should be able to work with pretty much all the profiles.

Hi Pada

The reason I would prefer a "pre-configured" config file, is because it will have the other settings like the pppoe, dyndns, etc

I have tried in the past with the wiki, and although I get parts of it working, there are something that don't work..

Also is there a big difference in setting up openvpn other than choosing openvpn in stead of pptp when creating the profile..

I'm guessing that very few people use DynDNS with their MikroTik routers, because they don't natively support it and you have to write a script for it.
PPPoE doesn't require any configuring.

OpenVPN support really sux with MikroTik routers, so the chances of you finding someone with a working OpenVPN setup is very small.

I'd suggest that you rather use the Wiki and if you're stuck somewhere ask here.

Like you'll struggle to use my config, because I'm using VLANs and each port of my router is configured for a different purpose.
If you PM me your E-mail addr, I can send you my config, but I can't promise that it would be of any use, since its for v5.0 RC7 and I have configured quite a lot of crap on it :D

Started playing with my RB750's again last week, and seems to be going good.... :) I upgraded to version 4.16 (from 3.29) and did a fresh setup, with most of the things working, pppoe, dhcp, pptp, firewall, port forwarding etc

Using the wiki, a few other sites as well as the Training Video's from Greg Sowell , I now have a betting understanding of how most thing work.

There's still quite a lot for me to learn, but for now I'm still trying to figure out how to setup usermanager to manage my cap. I uploaded the userman package and can access it from http://router_ip/userman but that's as far as I get I don't know what to do next, I tried adding users/customers/routers but just cleared everything as I'm stuck .. I also tried the built in hotspot which 'works' but I don't really like it.

Also another thing... I have 3 RB750's, while upgrading from 3.29 to 4.16 I pulled the plug one of of the RB750's as it was taking long to reboot... and now none of the Ethernet ports light up, just the power light comes on.. But if I connect it directly to my pc, the local area connection connects, but still no light comes on, also can't access it via winbox (mac or ip)..

You might be able to unbrick it with TFTP or something like that, but I've never done that.
