Hi all,

I've seen many modem/routers but which should I buy, those modem/router combos or how does this modem router thing work. I've got a single pc, win xp, no network at my place. Thanx ppl :P

try get a router if you can affford the little bit extra, it will gve you a little bit of protection in the form of NAT (firewall)
people on the internet see your router instead of your computer (more or less)

routers have modems but modems dont have routers (if that makes sense?)

make and model is personal preference, netgear have some nyce products and planet have ok pricing/quality. billion are also around they should be simmilar to the duxbury range....the jury's out on that lot :p

A quick question here:

What make ADSL router does Telkom give you when you buy from them? What do they charge for it?

Marconi router.

They charge you, well what do you have?

heheh, sorry, too lazy to go search telkom's site now.

Marconi? Erm, they tried to rub a Chronos off on us for R800. Could get the EXACT same Chronos router from Genex for about R450 ex vat. Also can get the Chronos ADSL modem for R210 ex vat. Someone making a penny?

I'll have to check whether Telkom wanted R800 for the router or for the modem. In any case, the Chronos modem is purring along happily. No complaints from the user.

Ah yes, Telkom charged the client R800 for the Chronos modem, which can be purchased from Genex for R240 inc vat. Isnt that a rather big mark up? R560, almost the same profit they get for line rental :P

modem <> router. will explain details below. but the short answer is using PPPoE it connects your computer to Telkom/SAIX and then they connect you to the internet

NAT <> firewall. Yes, the router will give natting which gives added protection but NAT is not a firewall.

In the sense of an ADSL router you are right, but in the true sense of the word a router does not have a modem.
A modem is used to translate (for lack of less technical word) analogue signals (such as what goes along a phone line) to digital signals (as used in your computer) and visa versa. For ISDN and ADSL modem is the wrong word since there is no conversation between ananlogue and digital it is all digital. Modem is used more as general term now to state a device that connects you to the internet.
All a router does in the tradional sense is route packets and can not dialup without an external device or a card.
