I went for the Concept II model D after spending money on cheaper brands and regretting every moment of it. With the CII you will not be sorry, this is well supported and I see it as the world standard for indoor rowers. I bought mine here:
I picked one up similar to the below on gumtree a few years back for like R400 (granted it's not close to high tech, but it worked out alright). I think it's still seeing service at my cousins place.
Makro have the Trojan brand versions which are relatively cheap and on special often like this : http://www.makro.co.za/p/4970/trojan-colorado-360-rower/ .I have one of those, a cheap[er] way to find out it is still pretty boring thing to do in your living room . I can't complain about its reliability though, was as good as the ones i used in the gym.
Now i'm rowing for real on a dam, much better and a kayak is cheaper than a freaking rowing machine!
Yes it is. I mounted an LCD screen and a raspberry Pi in front of it and watch video/music while rowing. To kill the boredom and motivate you, Concept II has an online rowing community where you can row with other people over the web.
