RSA C-130 Emergency Landing

That aircraft was apparently 25% of our operational C-130 fleet.

No, it was more like 100%.

AFAIK there are not four operational C-130, there was only that one.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

We have to stop with this Peacekeeping stuff, the ANC has turned South Africa into a poor third-world country.
 
Pity, given that a fairly iconic plane suffered and potentially some good people ... reminds me of back in the day when I thought photography makes a good hobby, behold, the C130 in flight over blouberg beach at max zoom in all its 2MP glory :ROFL: ... shot freehand 15 years ago

The Reuters report takes the cake. Shoot me for laughing at that, but it's more dangerous than the crash landing, it nearly killed me (cofee drowning) after seeing this, then reading Reuter's headline.

Yeah it really sucks for SA. Those C130s, as old and clanky as they are, are amazing machines.

I recently flew on 2 of them (the shorter and longer versions) to and from Jan Mayen - landing on sand/gravel terrain, but surprisingly comfortable inside - you sit in netting next to the cargo and pretty much have to wear headphones to dampen the noise.

You obviously never caught a Min Dae Flossie! More like they abused a lot during the border war. If it wasn't for the huge hangover and knowing that you had 12 month's pay waiting for you, you would have had extra brown browns when you stepped off at AFB Waterkloof.

The Flossie was an absolute luxury when compared to long haul in a Dak. It was amplified a thousand times if you were unlucky enough to sit in the tail section.

I was lucky going to Ondangwa. Caught the SAFAIR Boeing from Waterkloof direct. Had air hostesses, drinks, everything. Coming back I think they put me on the stopping service from Ondangwa to Waterkloof with about 6 stops along the way. Had an engineer with a touch crawling around every 30 minutes checking for hydraulic leaks. Felt super safe. Got very drunk on the train down to Durban that evening.

The tail section used to bounce around a lot. A funny sight was someone who was on their first flight on one equipped with a toilet (which was at the back). If they tried to use it they came out a changed person from trying to hold themselves to the seat.
