While going through old documents to see what I can gooi weg, and what I must keep, I came across a wad of Republic of South Africa Defence Bonus Bonds / VerdedigingsBonusObligasie of various denominations.
Of course I'm giving away my age here, but these were all bought in the 1970s & '80s whenever my wife (now "late") & I had a few spare RR's to invest. This was at at time when we were earning around R150 pm each.
They were supposed to earn a 5% p.a. interest rate back then :erm:
So, I guess I am aiming this post at the 60+ age group MyBB members (are there any here?), but I am wondering if anyone knows if they can still be redeemed, and if so, how.
All the Bonds I have total about (face value) R1,000 ... if they are still valid that R1,000 should now, with compound interest, be worth around R7,000
If the informed opinion is that they are no longer valid, i.e. they have been de-monetarised, then I can use them to start my next braai, or to wallpaper my Pub wall.
