Is anyone else being affected by the strike.... all around my neighbourhood, and surrounding areas in randburg, the rubbish is piling up, and it is getting quite scary.

Surely this is going to become a serious health issue, as everyone just keeps dumping their uncollected rubbish on the pavement... then washed into the drains... etc?

Anything I can do? - anyone know of a cheap refuse collector?

That would be racist... :P

Seriously though wish I could, they are charging us a couple hundred rand a month, on top of rates etc and then VAT as well, and no service is being delivered.

Phone and ask for the charges to be reversed. Pikitup aren't paying people on strike and why should you pay for a service you don't get?

Take your rubbish to the dump yourself until the strike is over.

Not quite so easy.... closest dump is a good many++ km away, and kinda busy during office hours...... also, thats hardly the point, i'm paying for a service that is not being delivered.

Fair enough. Its a lot better than watching it rot away on the pavement though.

Is it a private service? Last year I had the same problem with the municipality - they didn't collect rubbish for 8 weeks. We all had to drive to the landfill ourselves until they stopped striking.

My problem is I am not contracted to Pickitup directly. The municipality decided they are the correct people for the job.... I have no say over what we pay pickitup or how their arrangements are made.

Not saying it is ok to leave it on the pavement, i'm starting to notice the smell wafting through the neighbourhood, and want to get someone privately in to collect it.

I did phone the City of Johannesburg, and was politely told, that even though service is not being delivered, I am not entitled to a refund.... basically, pay us for doing nothing... thank you.

ARGH

Do what I do. I drive to my municipally with my black bags, go to the front door with them, rip it open and throw all of the rubbish at the front door and the I get in my car and go home.

If I pay for a service I expect a service!

Ridiculous. How can you not be entitled to a refund?! I would stop payment immediately.

I sense an opportunity for someone with a large trailer.

I can stop payment... and I will find my water and electricity cut off....and have to pay reconnection fees, its bloody extortion

What you do, is you get the rate payers association of your area to lodge a complaint.....

You the pay your fees into a trust account. The municipality can't cut off your services if you're paying, but just not paying them YET.

CPA! CPA! CPA!

set it on fire!

Service Delivery Protests FTW!!!!

I think that will smell even worse.

I must say it is rather ironic that the people who aren't paying for the services are the ones that protest the most.

Well that goes for 95% of all strikes

My concept of making a point. Collect all the rubbish and dump it in front of the mayor's house, directors of pickitup, and the city hall. If the people on charge don't feel our pain, they need to smell it

But surely one will then be charged with illegal dumping?

I only ask because I am seriously tempted... it just started pouring with rain, and the rubbish is flowing down the streets.

But if we can take away the rubbish from a few lawyers, we might get them to take on the illegal rubbish case pro bono.

I was shocked driving through parkhurst and saw all the rubbish. Even though I don't stay in Jhb, I still believe that citizens should suffer for something that should be managed by the city council

If they dont see you they cant charge you...
