We are a new company looking for a good Ruby on Rails developer to begin developing the site.

It seems that there is a real shortage of R.O.R developers in SA, so does anyone know if any good Ruby on Rails developers/Development companies?

Thanks

They exist. But understand that there are less than a dozen good RoR developers in SA.
You are probably suffering from two things.
Why would they want to work for you as opposed to ThoughtWorks, AWS and RS?
And are you offering enough for them to leave said companies to work for you?

Yip, I've done some work in RoR but not nearly enough as I want to. Also dont know any other RoR dev companies

Since there isn't really a market for RoR developers except startups who don't have much money anyway why don't you give other web devs who don't know RoR but can pick it up quickly a chance? Like a test for example.

We are not looking for a fulltime developer to employ. A freelancer was more along the line of what we need.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there are a lot of websites built on r.o.r including twitter. It really isn't about being a small startup, its more about the fact that it is open source, which is the main reason we didn't go with ASP.NET

The only real alternate option we have is outsourcing it to another country, but I would like to try and avoid that.

Twitter in the early days was built on RoR but not so anymore maybe apart from the front end but AFAIK the rest was moved to JVM languages like Scala.

There are RoR developers in SA mostly in Cape Town I would think.

Partially correct. Twitter still uses rails. Their worker software Starling was written in ruby and Kestrel is the new one in Scala.

But for a high volume website like twitter I would have rather gone the sinatra route its much lighter in comparison.

@mav3r1ck - my company does RoR work, we do it on the side from our day to day jobs. PM if you interested we can see if we have what you want, we are a three man strong ruby team, rails, sinatra, grape etc.

Hmm. Ruby on Rails... Not quite what I expected when read the post.....

Good luck with that, there is a good reason why most outsourcing has stopped and been brought back inhouse.

The price South African developers charge is outrageous. I would like to get the bulk of the code done over there, then get a free-lance dev to manage any updates or ad-hoc requirements.

Yeah, don't outsource to India unless you have a limitless maintenance budget. There are less than 100 RoR devs in SA that rear our heads from our caves. If you're looking for a freelancer, try http://brea.kfa.st/‎ I've worked with him and he's solid.
