Does RC3 allow for different play styles? I have Rugby Challenge 1, which is okay and quite fun with a friend, but it seems the only viable way of playing is "running rugby" and tossing the ball around wildly (the fact that Sidhe started with rugby league games kinda shows here). Any other way of playing results in losing the ball or the forwards/flyhalf are not in their right positions for keeping the game tight or kicking for territory.

Rugby 2008 on the other hand allowed you to play 1) running rugby 2) kick and chase territory based game 3) tight / keep it between the forwards strategies etc. We all like watching the All-Blacks running from their own 22 in real-life, but when playing a game and trying to outsmart your opponent it is more fun to have various strategic options at your disposal.

P.S. If Rugby 2008 was re-released with the exact same graphics and just an updated roster on the Xbox 360 / PS3, I would buy it today!

I would also buy the 2008 edition with a new roster, any day of the week. Still the best rugby game ever.

RC3 does allow you to play different styles, in RC2 I played running rugby, in RC3 this proved to be a challenge. I have won the world cup twice, the Super 15, the Quad Nations and the Africa Cup. I have scored a few tries via running rugby, but most of my tries came from the forwards, pickup, drive and crash ball.
One thing that irritates me beyond believe is when they try to tackle me, somehow they turn my player around and he keeps on breaking tackles, effectively running back to his own goal line. The same things happens when i go over their goal line, instead of just touching down, he keeps breaking tackles right into the dead ball zone, I have came very close to going super sayian 4 when this happens.
It also seems that your number 9 is never where he is supposed to be, I have made multiple "Box kicks" with Francios Louw or Bismark Du Plesis.
The game also doesn't really give you a chance to kick for touch since you never pass to the flyhalf, I might be missing something though, I did not do the tutorial, But the flyhalf is never where is supposed to be, Victor Matfield is always in the fly-half position (probably 80% of the times) which is real frustrating when there is no time left and you want to preform a drop goal.

The player ratings is also messed up, Fourie Du Preez has a rating of 80 while Ruan Pienaar has a rating of 86. You also cant edit the players.

Maybe not 100% what you guys are looking for, but at least it has updated kits and other goodies that might tickle your fancy:

PS: You require Rugby 08 obviously in order to play it :)

Tru Blu Entertainment owns the Rugby challege IP, Rugby challege 1 and 2 was developed by Sidhe. Sidhe no longer do console games.Tru Blu Entertainment needed new developers and had to pick one of wicked witch software or Big Ant Studios. Wicked witch software was happy to use the old game engine, Big Ant Studios prefered two create a new game engine. Big Ant Studios is known for sport games on conlose and PC with AFL Live, AFL Live: Game of the Year Edition, Rugby League Live 2, Rugby League Live 2: The World Cup Edition, Don Bradman Cricket 14, Tabletop Cricket, Rugby League Live 3, Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 and Dirt Track Racing (do be released). All Wicked witch software sport titles was for mobile gaming not one for console or PC. I wish Tru Blu went with BigAnt.

Thanks for the detailed reply! You had me at the first few lines but then started to lose me with the bugs, players out of position and non-editable ratings, now I'm reconsidering whether to get this :(

This looks great BUT the only problem with modded Rugby 08 on PC is you can't really use a controller. When I tried to use my Xbox 360 controller for Windows on the original game and other mods, the buttons are all wonky (not in the same layout as you would expect based on playing it on PS2). Wonder if anybody ever figured out how to fix it, could never find a solution via Google. Because the best part of a rugby game is playing vs a friend.

I must say I am very disappointed with the game.

Nowhere near as fun as EA Rugby '08.

It just feels the same each match you play, they attack the same channels, players all out of position.

The only fun part is the Be a Pro mode.

Very boring otherwise :(

Sounds like the first 2. Very disappointing. The price seems ridiculous for essentially new teamsheets and Pro mode only.
