Guys I heard on the news Yesterday they're awarding 100 000 Mil. to the 2010. Could this be right ?

In the speach i heard them say R 10 "Miljard" (Afrikaans).
Either way that is a sh*t load of money. I thought we're in it for the money.

Hey I have a mate in London who read in the papers the other day that the world is going to end and Armageddon is coming... Seriously it was in the paper.
Also a story about a guy who gave birth to a dog and then something else about Hawaii getting the 2010 WC...

we are going to loose the 2010, its just not official yet
germany, austrailia, uk... all of the 1st world countries are laughing at the idea of africa hosting it
ill take everyone a personal bet that by 2008 the worldcup would have been moved.

well we will have to wait and see, if its just a rumour...
think 4 urself... in less than 4 years we need to create public transport, build stadiums, train ppl and sort out crime
laughable if you ask me, with all the skilled ppl leaving the country.
I'm leaving 2, and closing down my company, cause of crime. We have been hit too many times now.

It could be quite a cool revenue source (if it was legal) get the Sports are Rec or whatever to take bets that SA will keep the world cup past 2010, encourage every skeptic et al to take bets on SA loosing the hosting rights and use the winnings to assist in financing the world cup.
I don't think FIFA would take away the world cup unless something horrible happens in 2009 (*cough* elections *cough* violence and intimidation *cough* showers and baby oil *cough*) and thats pretty much the case always (I think Fifa has a backup plan for every cup incase stadia get blown up or countries decide to start genocide runs and stuff). South Africa does appear to be on schedule and things look good, but I don't think we are ready and I don't think we will be ready unless a specific section of mindset changes.
IMHO Just about everything regarding the world cup is government driven (or at least government lead) and thats a bit of a problem, because the government isn't a constant and the private sector is where the real flesh comes in. South Africa can't even provide broadband internet without getting the DPE involved, can you imagine if a stadium collapses and one needs to be built at the last minute. All Germany needed to do was put a "we need investors for a new stadium" drive in Frankfort and the money would be there "we need engineers" and a couple from Potsdam and such would be available. The Gov wouldn't need to lift a finger and a new stadium would be organized simply because the investors would be confident in getting their returns and prepared to invest in that sort of thing.

is it me or you ? mmmm, what about MTN and FNB to name just two - get real every company worth their salt is banging on the doors trying to get in with some kind of sponsorship - the returns are just too great to ignore

okay let me put it this way:
Being on schedule does not mean that you will be ready, it mearly means that you aren't behind schedule and are in a better possition
IOC warned Beijing not to take their eye off the ball wrt the 2008 Olympics even though China is ahead of schedule, the reason is because now is when things can go wrong.
FNB et al want to sponsor high visability areas of things, IIRC getting investments together for PE staduim is almost impossible so much so that the brunt of the costs of construction are
The N4 highway as a private construction concept seemed fraught with difficulties to begin with. it is not going to be possible for SA to say in 2009

Im not suggesting that the Gov isn't aware of the problem or even that there aren't attempts to redress it, what I am saying is that there is a mind set problem that even if our infrustructure is in place 2 years in advance may cause a problem. On this forum in particular people should be concious of the problems SA has with a parastatal mentality and how prosperity is stiffled by government control and what Im saying is that 2010 is a very good thing, but to date the main player seems to be SA Gov and not the football association or the people of SA generally or private enterprise.
