the wording for Xbox Live has changed from "Silver Membership" to "Free."

Xbox Live Free?

Hmmm, M$ is realy pulling all stops to try and stay competive.

As far as I can tell it's just the wording that's changed. Silver has always been free, just that now it looks like it will be called Xbox Live Free instead of Xbox Live Silver. I could be wrong though.

I doubt MS would do it. They make waaaaaay too much from Live already. I doubt they would drop the charge to try and push up sales.

If it's true then all I can say is that there is a saying "bullsh...t baffles brains", specially in over commercialized USA. The inclusion of the word "Free" would now be seen as comparison to PSN and many consumers would now believe they get something extra for free even if they always had the featured benefit anyway. E3 2009 showed the same concept used by M$ to confuse and abuse everyone by selling advertising BS namely to the uninformed public.

Just clever marketing. See the bottom of the box in the pic: "Sold Seperately: Xbox Live Gold subscription". The basic silver membership has always been free.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

M$ giving you something for free...... HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!!!!!!

Is there not a law against misleading advertising. Like using the word "Free" to mislead consumers? I think we have something like this in SA. Afterall the average American is quite "Doff"!

But it is free, you just don't get some additional functionality (like multiplayer!) unless you pay. It still allows you to buy from the marketplace, update your console etc. There's not much that you can do with a free membership though :(

I think those of us who use Gold are quite happy to pay for it to keep it up to the excellent standard we've been used to so far :/

The phrase "Xbox Live Free" can be read in many ways but reading straight forward it sounds like the full live service is "free". People buying it do not see Live as a silver or gold membership. If it said "Xbox Live Silver Membership FREE" then that will be a different story.

Yeah, confusing to everyone!

Yeah it really is an awesome service. There's never a shortage of players for almost any game you buy :)

I'm happy with paying for Gold. Its a dedicated service with MS making sure that the infrastructure is up to scratch. They do enough updates to make sure its stable for most users.

Sure it's not on a local server and pings suffer against international players but its a great way to spend an evening against equal or better ability opponents.

A bit misleading calling silver membership Xbox Live Free, but it was always free so not much of a hassle in my opinion.

Well with the new PS3 Slim coming in at the same price as the Xbox and PSN being completely free [specifically the multiplayer part] , even i will be reconsidering . If i calculate the Xbox Live Sub for say 2 years vs. buying a PS3 Slim [which is a blueray drive afterall] ...might actually be a better option.

PLus if they did make LIve absolutely free, they would upset people who went out and bought Live membership, like myself, I still have like 6 months on a year subscription. They would have to give people M$ points or something!!?!?
