I have my laptop plugged into my UPS thinking that this will give extra protection to the laptop from surges. But a guy was questioning the merit of this being that when the power goes off it will be DC power going into the laptop transformer, as opposed to AC power when we have electricity. I am a greenhorn. Any thoughts from the knowledgeable?

No -- the UPS will be supplying AC current, not DC, to the transformer.

Dude, your UPS should output AC. The DC from the UPS's battery goes through an inverter and powers your devices as 230V AC.

A more imprtant question is whether your UPS's output is in a true sine wave or an (modified) square wave, although modified squares not too much of a problem for laptops coz of their own chargers.

what is valid is that the ups runs on dc batteries, which will get inverted to 240v ac, which the laptop transormer will then convert back to 12v dc.

this is a very inefficient and wasteful process, but i 'spose you gotta do what you gotta do
