I have a mid-2011 iMac with one of those sloooooow internal 500g HDD (7200rpm I think, may even be 5400), which is now really getting me frustrated with all the photos and what not I have on there - opening iPhoto is an exercise in patience.

What I want to do is run OSX off an external thunderbolt SSD to make things snappier (mid-2011 iMacs only have USB 2 ports!).

I have checked out a few youtube vids of guys doing that and it definitely makes a difference. Problem is I cant seem to find a local supplier of a thunderbolt external SSD anywhere. Tried all the usual places - takalot, kalahari. Not too keen on shipping from overseas (unless forced to). Anyone done something like this? And where did you get your HDD and enclosure from? Thanks everyone.

I have the Lacie 256gb external ssd with USB 3.0 and thunderbolt. Plugged into my Mac mini via thunderbolt and installed a fresh copy of OS X works perfectly.

Where did you get that LaCie drive from?

Thanks bvonfintel for the link. If Looney can't point me to a different supplier I will buy from here.
