Two Russian International Space Station crew members began a spacewalk Friday that is expected to last more than six hours.

Flight Engineers Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin opened the hatch at 10:39 am EDT (1439 GMT), NASA said on its website. The two will route cables for a Russian laboratory module and install an experiment panel.

The work 400 kilometres above the earth's surface is planned to last 6.5 hours.

Last month, two other crew members had to abort a spacewalk after what was believed to be cooling fluid leaked inside the helmet of Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano.

The ISS crew currently consists of three Russians, two Americans and one Italian. The next spacewalk is scheduled for August 22.
