SA’s broadband grows up

I'm past the point of getting over excited at news like this, but point is that even though its happening extremely slowly there is a shift in the markets.......in my eyes the "new" bad guy over taking the oh so evil telkom these days are ICASA...but cheers to a tid bit of hope ;)

I hope I am wrong tho....even the new offering from Neotel is a rather dissapointing, a cheek even.

What is to stop new companies from not dropping prices. They all seem to have the same attitude of "well they pay it already so.....". Yes maybe they give us a few cents break or an added feature but nothing that can compare to international standards.

This happened in the cellphone industry when all the new players came on board. It is called "screw the poor to get rich", cause we have no one else to go to, there is always someone with fingers in all the pies.

Dont get my wrong I hope to hell I am wrong, I am just hope that we dont get taken for a ride again, because the more this happens the more other countries laugh and take us less seriously.

I'm sorry. This is just not news anymore. Neotel has launched NeoFlex. Prices so high its much better to buy IS uncapped accounts. We haven't seen any price drops what so ever! I hope that SA can't host the 2010 World Cup. Its going to be a disaster and I don't want to say I'm from SA if its a massive fail. We lack the technology cause every person wants to screw the next to make a extra buck.
 
Neotel is a player in the market yet. They don't even reply to quote requests that could have given them R50k+ monthly in business. They are pretty useless in my books.
On a more personal note, their coverage is little to non-existing unless you stay in the city centre.
 
So, with the glut of international bandwidth to be available imminently (tm), the issue is going to be local access, which no one seems to be doing anything about in any meaningful way at present.
i.e. When the eventual "tomorrow" everyone keeps harping on about arrives, the only thing that will have changed is what they bill us for, local instead of international.

What? Dude... they are laying cable like crazy! Where do you live? Where I live the pavements have been dug up like three times already in the last year. Licenses have been issued which allow any IECNS license holder to build their own network.... and many of those guys are already acting on that option. I know the prices have not come down yet... but to say that nothing meaningful is happening is far from the truth.

You do realize that to lower prices, we need more bandwidth, and to get more bandwidth we need to lay more cables. These things don't just magically appear underground by themselves.

Well, you see... it's like this.

The food producers say that the fuel price does not affect the price of food in bringing it down... only in making it go up. So don't expect food prices to drop when the fuel price goes down. :confused:

And... the telecomms providers say... the availability of bandwidth will not necessarily affect the price of internet in bringing it down. In fact, nothing will bring it down. Just get used to being raped for your internet. Cos we want to make lots of money. And you monkeys are used to being ripped off, so we figure we can still rake you for all you are worth. Now quit whining and pay up! :cool:
 
Actually it's a good thing that they lay more cable.

Here's why.

Companies will need to get a ROI - and if they don't they go bankrupt. Simple.

So... if there's 10 companies all laying fiber, but only three or four gets enough customers to make their ROI, the rest will either have to merge, or...

...lower their prices in a desperate bid to attract more customers.
 
For a new era you need to be comparable with international countries.

So.

Operators do away with per MB billing.
Operators do away with per GB billing.
Operators do away with port shaping.
Latency comparable with other countries
International standard contention ratios that are published.
Skype to cellphone numbers should be affordable.
No you may not use VOIP in contracts removed.
Cost comparable with other developing countries.


So will SA enter new ERA? Definitively NOT.

I'm with you there man, its actually quite sad to see these journalists peddling the same BS story day after day.

How about actually doing their jobs and exposing the criminal profiteering which is happening at every single service provider in SA?
