Hi,

I am doing a large research project on SA Broadband for school and I would like to know what you think I should include in it and where I can get information and so on.

Thanks

Thanks that should help a lot.

I just need the following now:

1. A definition of exactly what broadband is. (how it differs from dial up) (i.e. why we call it broadband)

2. The main South African broadband issues and possible solutions.

Now I am not asking for you to do it, I was just wondering if you could give me some links of where I can read about these things. I would also like to know why you bought broadband internet and why do you think you need it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

!google broadband definition:

A transmission facility having a bandwidth sufficient to carry multiple voice, video or data channels simultaneously. Each channel occupies (is modulated to) a different frequency bandwidth on the transmission medium and is demodulated to its original frequency at the receiving end. Channels are separated by ìguardbandsî (empty spaces) to ensure that each channel wonít interfere with its neighboring channels. This technique is used to provide 50 CATV channels on one coaxial cable

:p

oh and: Broadband Definition

Broadband refers to the ability of the user to view content across the internet that includes large files, such as video, audio and 3D. Broadband refers to an increased ability to do so. The term narrowband can refer to the inability to do so. A user's broadband capability is typically governed by the last mile issue, the connection between the ISP and the user

ohhh narrowband = our country

It should be quite easy, there is no such thing as broadband in SA! Why didn't I get such an easy project when I was still in school?

This thread just makes me think I'm an OAP or something, I could've done with a computer in school, and the internet - it wasn't a reality at the time, broadband - well I agree we still don't have that in SA - not with caps & outdated junk like 512K & 1Mbps...

I know the bath water swurls in the other direction down here, but our Antipodean friends don't seem to have the same backward broadband trend that we are afflicted with here.

broadband in SA is one of many products the government has identified as
a source of income.

To protect this source of income the government has created leglislation,
unlike most "free" countries, to ensure that no matter how badly the product
is delivered - it will always deliver substantial "money" to those the government
prefers from those whom the government needs to exploit.

Essentially, technology and service delivery, are not on the top of the agenda
as in other "free" countries of the world and this government appears quite content
with the fact that over 90% of the voting population will not, for some time, have
access to this very cheap and deliverable technology.

Telkom is the government appointed monopoly which owns the copper cables
along which broadband is delivered.

With favourable laws in place and a lame duck authority (ICASA)
Telkom determines pricing levels to ensure its continued existance and profitability.

Broadband in SA is not much about service and technology delivery, it is about money.

Well put nohiway. That is exactly the definition of our local "Broadband".
We're so lucky to have such a unique form of "broadband", not experienced anywhere else in the world. Its so unique, the monopoly that runs it sees fit to charge an exsorbitant line rental charge, the likes of which is not seen anywhere else in the world.
