SA cell users cornered: Virgin Mobile

I don't think many SA companies get it! They are always striving to provide more VALUE than lower prices! I don't want the value, I want lower prices for a basic, reliable service. Is it so much to ask? If Virgin Mobile's stratigy is to provide VALUE and not lower prices, then we have another Vodacom, MTN, CellC on our hands. So much for competition!

Telkom + Virgin ... ugh talk about complete opposites ;) haha. ok seriously though, I think Telkom will not be bothered with them since they appear to want to make more money directly and since they in a monopoly situation why use a brand that is in SA perhaps lesser known that Telkom.

Virgin and the sno may happen seeing both seem to have similar values, ie not lowering cost but just smiling more + supposive better service while taking your money. Btw isn't virgin originally reknowned as the no frills provider at low cost, guess here they wanna make some money.

I don't get it, sure we in Africa but surely a working, what you pay for what you get servce is minimum. This is why unless icasa act like other regulators and take a hard stance wrt pricing or we will continuously be milked for every cent cause companies come here with no fear xpecting to make a some quick bucks.

While it is small steps for Virgin for now, the company said it would be happy to partner with other companies to offer quadruple play (broadband, television, fixed and mobile telephony) in South Africa, as it has with British company NTL (announced yesterday, making it the first company on the globe to offer quad play). “If Telkom is interested in rebranding itself as Virgin we’d be happy to get involved,” he says.

G-d help us all... :(

The way cellphone companies (and Telkom) see it is that if they're making record profit, they don't need to lower prices as they think (wrongly) people are happy to pay these types of prices.

Most of the time it's either because people don't have a landline or they need it (business, family) etc.

If only we had a strong consumer Act in place like the UK :(

lol ppl r so funny..
richard brason brill for improving service where need and to make it cheaper..
Y would he want to tarn his rep.

but u can only speculate on this stuff. u can only really c what happens when they luanch later this year..

I say screw Virgin Mobile and I call for a national boycott of their product. Maybe if nobody buys into the bulls**t that value is better than lower prices, it'll force these global profiteers to rethink their strategy. After all, if we the South African public continue to support these guys, then we only have ourselves to blame for high prices!

Gosh, enough is enough, wake up South Africa!

Don't agree with the part about wanting more VALUE over the PRICE. Most South Africans will want LOWER PRICES first and foremost. Who's the cheapest at the moment and what percentage of the market share do they have?

To sum it up

Virgin = one who doesn't offer what we really want ..

seems to make some sense ...............:D

No matter how much they strive for more VALUE, they always fail to deliver more than PROMISES. They don't know the meaning of the work VALUE. They are delivering no more than excuses to charge you more than the service is worth.

Couldn't have said it better...

Funny how you can have better service on a cellphone when all it provides is basic voice comunication with voice mail ? They not even bothering to chase the market with better than 2.5G data services whilst MTN & Vodacom have moved on to 3.5G/hsdpa etc. So value is a hard thing to evaluate unless they speaking of other services like cell repair etc which really is not resposibility of cell company(though in SA with contracts it seems they've taken it up) and they do place emphasis on cross branding. I think unless you have use virgin service you won't want to move.(they will likely cross subsidise things.. like if you go to gym there you get x free minutes etc ;) )
